Roadmap: Abstractions at Unit 44

Posted 4 months ago in Arts & Culture Features

Experimental music in Ireland is enjoying an almost unprecedented wave of innovation, but also of appreciation. There is perhaps no better indicator of this than the longstanding Unit 44 space in Stoneybatter, operated by the Kirkos Ensemble, an experimental music collective.

This unlikely hub of exploratory audio discovery, in a repurposed shop, has hosted acts such as the astounding piano and drum duo, Brutalust as well as the excellent Fronics series, as well as Ian Lynch of Lankum/One Leg One Eye and instrumental pioneer, Chequerboard.

Screenings and exhibitions of other unconventional natures are also commonplace here, such as the Faoin Talamh exhibition, or important screening events like their May evening of D.I.Y. film from Palestine.

One performance inbound that we are particularly excited about is the August 16th bill,  featuring Dan Walsh of Fixity notoriety, alongside Black Coral, the abstract alter ego of Wild Rocket/Creepy future alumni, ‘Moose’ Mangenetty, esteemed composer Jonathan Deasy of Cork and Dublin based jazz guitarist Patrick Keegan.

Their Instagram is a mandatory follow for anyone interested in the fringe elements of expression.
