You’d have assumed that sustainable packaging technology should have progressed a lot further in the 70 years since the launch of Tetra Pak.

Climate change and public sentiment pressures are forcing the change at a more dramatic pace.

Diageo launched their first ever 100% paper-based spirits bottle for the mainstream market recently. Plastic-free and paper-based, made from sustainably sourced wood, the bottle will debut with Johnnie Walker whisky in early 2021.

The technology allows for a variety of single-mould bottle designs to be used across a variety of liquid products and sees Diageo collaborating with fellow corporate behemoths Unilever and PepsiCo.

Carlsberg launched a paper bottle in late 2019.
