Mizunara is an extremely rare Japanese oak with reported characteristics of sandalwood and coconut. And post Bourbon aging, Mizunara is the finish for the latest single malt whiskey by Glendalough.

At the launch, co-founder Kevin Keenan recounted his quest to the island of Hokkaidō to get his mitts on this oak which needs to grow 200 years before being coopered.

He ended up at a “blind bid on tree trunks” which happens once a year.

“It grows quite twisted and you’ll only get one cask out of a Mizunara, it takes three years to dry… there’s a lot of chance and leaps of faith with it.”

Merging the best barley in the world from here with what they consider to be the “best oak in the world” meant Glendalough made their own “red thread of fate” in their explorations.
