The atmosphere is more like that of a Pub than a Pizzeria, but there is no doubt about the product.”

There was great news for local pizzeria Cirillo’s on Dublin’s Baggot Street earlier this month when it was announced that it had secured No. 16 in the ranking of Best European Pizzerias by the prestigious 50 Top Pizza online guide to the best Italian and European Pizzerias.

The results are based on a survey following an anonymous judging visit and were announced online from Milan yesterday.

In their citation the judges noted that; “The atmosphere is more like that of a Pub than a Pizzeria, but there is no doubt about the product. The pizza is remarkably like the traditional Neapolitan pizza, well risen and, more importantly, well baked.”

They also commented on the authenticity of the ingredients, observing; “There is an obsessive research into Italian products, from the tomatoes to the extra virgin olive oil”, adding that they were particularly surprised at finding “some excellent friarielli” on the menu.

The Judges also made special mention of the restaurant’s ambiance, complimenting  the staff on their very attentive service, ultimately concluding that, “the Italian spirit is all in the food. Obviously, a good selection of beers. The best in Dublin.” Praise indeed!

The accolade is particularly welcome in the current climate. Chef Owner James Cirillo is delighted with the news, which is a huge achievement by any standard. “We take great pride in the quality of our ingredients and to have that acknowledged is wonderful!”

Cirillo’s pizza dough is slow proved for 30 hours using a recipe from the Head Pizzaiolo Daniele Accardo, before being cooked in a pizza oven specially imported from Naples, which burns a blend of Irish oak and ash.

Diners can also enjoy a choice of regional Italian wines from boutique producers, a nice selection of craft beers and a choice of five takes on the Italian Spritz as an aperitif.

Pasta, breads, pizza dough and ice creams are all made fresh in house every day, with authentic Italian menus featuring antipasti, delicious pasta dishes and tasty wood fired pizzas.

Lunch is served Monday to Thursday, 12 midday to 3pm, and dinner from 5pm ‘til late.

Open all day and evening on Friday and Saturday from 1pm. Sunday from 5pm.
