Pixar, the animation house responsible for modern classics WALL.E and Finding Nemo, have joined forces with Disney on their latest flight of fancy, Up. Under increasing pressure from a construction company to sell his property and not quite content to spend his remaining years in a retirement home, pensioner Carl Fredricksen resolves to honour a promise made to his late wife Ellie and travel to South America in search of his idol, the famous explorer Charles Muntz. A former balloon salesman, Carl realises this dream in an unusual fashion, attaching hundreds of them to his house and soon takes to the skies. However this make-shift balloon comes with excess baggage in the form of enthusiastic Boy Scout Russell, who hopes to earn his assisting the elderly badge by tagging along. Up opened this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the only film of its kind ever to do so.
