In Conversation: Iván Repila + Pascale Baker

Multicultural literary voices come together for In Conversation, a new series of events at Instituto Cervantes which provides a platform for some of the most interesting voices in literature in Spanish and in English language.

The series kicks off this Thursday February 28th with Spanish Writer Iván Repila in conversation with Pascale Baker, lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD,

From a fight for survival to feminism or the role of social media, Spanish writer Iván Repila’s universe submerges the reader in current and timeless topics to reflect on our society’s concerns with an ability to move as well as raising awareness. Instituto Cervantes have invited him to Dublin to open In Conversation”, a new series of events to provide a platform to some of the most interesting voices in literature in Spanish and in English language.

The Bilbao writer, editor and cultural events manager will be in conversation with Pascale Baker, lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD, whose research goes from banditry in Latin American literature and culture from the 19th century to the present day.

Repila’s stories pay special attention to social changes and human behavior, through placing his characters in stirring and complex situations. Translated into eight languages, his novel The Boy Who Stole Attila’s Horse, a fable of two brothers trapped in a well, was described by the late Irish Times literary critic Eileen Battersby as “high art, an imaginative allegorical work of breathtaking yet restrained lyric power”. Repila’s third novel Prólogo para una guerra (Prologue for a War),  presented another fable around social movements, and in his new novel El aliado (The Ally) he humorously presents a provocative story about feminism and the role that men should play within the movement.

“In Conversation”, a new series from Instituto Cervantes is designed to prompt discussion among guests about their more recent works. The series proposes an immersion in the day-to-day of the creation process and the current affairs in Spain and Ireland with the purpose of sieving through the similarities and possible connections and differences. Join in and discover a new way to tell the history we are living today!
