Is the retro-futurist girlpop movement capable of yielding even one memorable album? La Roux’s fellow frontrunner Little Boots unleashed a debut album as flat as Dot Cotton’s walking corpse, and this collection is about as curvacious. It’s puzzling such a conundrum exists – Girls Aloud’s Tangled Up three years ago perfected the long-difficult art of the pop album with the simple solution of variety. La Roux, however, is like a Quality Street tin when only the shiny-wrapped dregs remain. Still satisfying for your sweet tooth, this backwards, shallow debut won’t last you ten minutes before you run out to buy a box of Roses.
