Despite the inarguably explosive stardom of Leslie Feist post the toe-tapping (iPod) commercial success of 1234, Canadian indie rockers Broken Social Scene still insist on treating their band members like children in a primary school play- everyone gets a chance in the spotlight. At least that’s the idea behind their latest project, Broken Social Scene Presents, a series of albums which each feature a single member of the musical collective. Bassist Brendan Canning steps up to the plate with “Love Is New” a track with horn interludes and a wa-wa pedal fit for the soundtrack of a Saturday Night Fever remake. A strutting Broken Social Scenester? Unexpected, but it works.
