Back in October we spoke with TD contributor and journalist Roisin Agnew about a new magazine combining local writing talent spilling their proverbials accompanied by the work of different artist each month. Issue number three of Guts, entitled ‘Blow Smoke and Hard Candy’ – featuring the illustration of Steve McCarthy and the words of Conor Creighton, Roisin Kiberd, Pádraic E. Moore and Kevin Power amongst others – launches at the start of May with celebratory party at Temple Bar’s purveyor of natty threads Indigo & Cloth featuring quick-fire readings from Guts contributors, prints from the magazine’s artwork for sale and This Greedy Pig DJs on the ones and twos.

People love hanging out by the canal at the first sign of sunshine, and people undoubtedly can’t get enough of festivals here, so stars have aligned, planets collided and hence we now got a new festival in and around a variety of venues in Portobello and Rathmines put together by Dublin City Council with support from Oxfam and Abner Brown’s in Rathmines. There’s too many bands to mention playing, but whether you’re in Mother Reilly’s or the Bello Bar there’s bound to be someone knocking out a tune over the weekend. Highlights look to beat the Home Beat curated stage in Mart with Maria Somerville kicking off at 9pm on Friday night. Full line-ups can be found on their Facebook page.
Ensemble Music present: Blackout #1
Friday 8 & Saturday 9 May | Royal Irish Academy of Music, Westland Row | 10.30pm, €20/25
The first in a series of concerts put together by Ensemble Music featuring performances of ‘dark music played in darkness’ with the added twist of a dine-in-the-dark component to the evening too. On music duties is Kirkos Ensemble, first time up they will be performing Olivier Messaien’s seminal chamber piece Quatour pour la fin du temps. Meanwhile serving up the grub are Kevin Powell and Vania Ling. Tickets are extremely limited for the two performances on Friday and Saturday night so book ahead as there aren’t any tickets on the door.
YUSSS! For Marriage Equality

A six-hour BYO extravaganza of tunes at good vibes sees Steambox Studios on School Street in D8 taken over by the likes of David Kitt, Cian Nugent, Sunken Foal, Patrick Kelleher and many more, all to raise funds for the YesEquality as we enter the last weeks of the marriage referendum campaign. Strictly a tickets only affair and with a capacity of 200 max, you’d best head down to Designist on George’s Street (or their website) to pick up a ticket quick.
