Galway-based theatre company Branar is bringing a little everyday magic to Dublin this spring with Story of a Day – Scéal Lae, a quietly beautiful children’s show that proves you don’t need dragons or fireworks to spark wonder.
Part of a nationwide tour, the production lands in Draíocht Blanchardstown (21 February), The Civic, Tallaght (24 February) and the National Concert Hall (19 March), giving city and county audiences a chance to catch one of the most gently inventive pieces of theatre for young people currently touring Ireland.
The story follows a young boy from morning to bedtime as he moves through what might appear to be a “nothing special happens” kind of day. Except, of course, everything is special — if you know where to look. Small observations become big thoughts, the ordinary slips into the extraordinary, and imagination quietly takes centre stage.
Written by children’s author Mary Murphy and brought to life with an original live score by composer Tom Lane, the show blends storytelling, animation and music in a way that feels calm, immersive and perfectly pitched for young audiences. Performer Eoin Ó Dubhghaill carries the piece with warmth and curiosity, inviting children to recognise their own thoughts, questions and inner worlds along the way.

As an added bonus for parents and educators, the show is presented in both English and Irish versions, making it as accessible as it is enriching. Running at around 40 minutes, it’s ideal for children aged four and up, and mercifully short enough to hold attention without being overwhelming.
As Branar celebrates its 25th anniversary, Story of a Day – Scéal Lae feels like a perfect distillation of what the company does best – thoughtful, high-quality theatre that respects young audiences and celebrates how they see the world.
Expect this one to linger in little minds long after bedtime.
