Word has it that sandwiches were first invented by the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, in the year 1762. As the story goes, on that fateful evening he was engrossed playing cards and, none too keen to abandon the gaming table for a spot of dinner, asked instead for a serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread that he could eat with his hands.
While history does not record who made the sandwich in question (our money’s on a woman in the kitchen), the years since have seen the game-changing culinary invention to which the Earl gave his name rapidly become a legend in its own lunchtime.
The modern dining staple is also the subject of a recent tome by Barry Enderwick telling the story behind dozens of different sandwiches with top tips on how to painstakingly recreate each one.

The corresponding live show comes to The Academy Dublin this month, in an event that sees the author engaging in the art of live sandwich making and tasting, alongside special guest Marcus O’Laoire.
A fun evening is promised, with fulsome audience participation also strongly encouraged.
7pm Fri July 18th. Tickets: €32.65
