The Black Keys – Everlasting Light

Starting off immediately with thumping drums, Everlasting Light builds up to a bit of a surprise when the vocals are first introduced. Singer Dan Auerbach goes falsetto, coming through in almost an electronic whisper, an interesting, eerie contrast against the giant percussion. The sparse lyrics and basic rhyme scheme aren’t exactly the stuff epic poetry is made of, but the lyrics aren’t the focus of the song. Less bluesy and more chilled out than most of the Black Keys’ material, it’s the music, not the words, that is the strength here.
