Marina and the Diamonds – Mowgli’s Road

After being the subject of much adulation for what seems like aeons, it’s hard to believe that this is the first ‘proper’ single from official Next Big Thing Marina and the Diamonds. For this double A-Side Marina hollers her Kate Bush/Siouxsie-esque vocal stylings over an infectiously catchy quasi-jungle beat. Backed by a full band this time around, MATD lets her more New-wave influences dominate in this bouncy mish-mash of styles that surprisingly works. While her blog musings/online tirades against other female popstrels show that she’s much more than a designer-clad Kate Nash, more tracks like this will prove to any remaining detractors that this is one lady not to mess with. Florence Welch may have the monopoly on kooky female-fronted acts at the moment but, based on this evidence, her reign may be a shortlived one.
