Boredom is a feeling even more universal than love, and there is power in the music that channels it. Loping languidly between songs about rich people, minor lovers in life’s soap opera and offhand dealings with the bigger things in life, Channel Orange is a paean to microdrama. For something that utilises the outward style of soul music so broadly and effectively, it can feel a little soulless at times but that’s not all that bad a thing.
