Florence Welch is nothing like Bjork, though she’s a little like Tori Amos (they’re but shades apart on the Loreal ‘Manic Redheads’ spectrum) with her full-volume vocals, breathtaking but stuck on industrial strength. This makes it unconvincing when she fitfully plays the waif, on the grungy Kiss With Fist and distressingly derivative Hurricane Drunk. The bluesy, mournful Girl With One Eye and an exquisite cover of You’ve Got the Love showcase the passion in her voice, but ultimately Florence risks being devoured by her own hype machine.
