Charlotte Gainsbourg
Rest
[Because Music]

Given that she’s a higher profile actor than singer, it’s tempting to forget what a fascinating musical artist that Charlotte Gainsbourg is.

Rest is sung largely in French, adding a layer of abstraction to casual listeners, but the music here is routinely immediate.

It calls to mind fellow Frenchies Phoenix, in its neat arrangements and clipped production style, and Gainsbourg’s vocals have the enjoyable quality of always feeling like she is whispering into your ear, even if you might not know what she is saying.
