Ariel Pink and ‘big production’ are not two phrases that go together very often. His songs usually sound like they have been routed through 80’s ghetto blasters multiple times before committed to tape, creating a distinctive and much-aped aesthetic. One that has been unceremoniously ditched on Round and Round, his forthcoming single on 4AD. Still recognisably Pink, it’s an expansive funky tune with 10cc atmospherics and an enormous reverb-swathed refrain. Pleasing as Pink’s production tricks of old were, if this is what happens when he steps out from the murkiness, then more, please.
