Squarehead are freshly returned from America, both the spiritual and physical home of comic hero Weird Al Yankovic, where they toured in anticipation of a split LP with Tuam power pop powerhouses So Cow and thought about their favourite Weird Al songs. Drummer Ruan Lovebeach, singer/guitarist Roy Duffy and bassist Ian MacFarlane present their findings here. Catch them on Saturday in the Workman’s on the last day of the FMC tour.

Ruan’s Choices

Jurassic Park

MacArthur Park is one of the most covered songs of all time, but no one’s ever combined it with our favourite movie or imbued it with so much raw passion.

You Don’t Love Me Anymore

The only song on the list that’s a Yankovic original, though the video parodies Extreme’s More Than Words (the cello player is a highlight). I love how soft and gentle he sounds on this one.

Polka Your Eyes Out

All but two of Al’s records have a polka medley of the day’s popular hits, this one features REM, Metallica, Digital Underground, Suzanne Vega and loads more. It was actually the first place I heard most of these songs. Word to your mother.
