Tallaght Basketball Arena

From across the floor, there’s a shimmer of almost two hundred or so girls and three boys as they await their moment to spring and shine.

There’s jewel-encrusted hair bows, the endless hiss of hair spray cans and de rigueur hair extensions. And not a pom-pom in sight.

With team names such as Aqua, Baby Blue, Deja Vu and Hot Shots; they bound out on to the court to backflip, tumble, uplift and somersault to a dodgem car bash of chart pop.

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Strike Force All-Star Cheerleaders showcase.

Head Coach Hayden McGurk, who is also a trainee garda, is on the mic duties with the natural charismatic skills you’d expect of a trainee garda.

However, he and his team can take pride on what’s on display here in front of a packed stadium of family, friends and supporters.

There’s determination etched into the spray-tanned of each and every face.

These contestants hail mostly from the catchment areas of Finglas, Ballymun and Ashbourne but the provisional Olympic recognition status which the sport was granted last year means an explosion of interest is on the cards.

Today he’s facing a full stadium of parents and family all packed into the basketball arena in Tallaght.

Next month, he’ll be leading their Snipers group to the Cheerleading and Dance Worlds Championships in Disneyland, Florida.

Bring it On!
