Jonny’s skateshop

In news even closer to home it’s a pleasure to see a new skateshop opening up in town. Jonny’s Skateshop at 40 Clarendon street should be open to the public by the time you’re reading this. With what seems to be a friendly staff and a nice selection of product from the likes of Anti-Hero, Think and Life Extension and I’m told a big delivery of soft goods on the way in time for Christmas, it should be good. Give them a like on Facebook to keep up date on all goings on or drop in yourself just to hello or next time you have a purchase to make try out Jonny’s instead of resorting to any of the many mail-order sites. Support your local skateshop.

As exciting as a major, big budget skate video release is with its associated years of hype and gratuitous shots of groups of lads high-fiving each other in slow motion, that really isn’t the be all and end all of skate videos as a whole. Sometimes nothing’s better than a proper homie video where you haven’t even heard of most of if not all of the guys featured, a video that gives us a chance to ride along, offering a glimpse into the lives of a group of friends and we can ultimately believe that in some respect WE too are part of their circle of friends and a wider brotherhood, an international fraternity based on love, respect and a shared passion.

Nah, only messing. These videos usually just have an awesome 90’s hip-hop soundtrack and lots of long lines filmed at night through traffic and various other places where one should most certainly not be skateboarding.

Case in point, this excellent new homie video out of Canada so, eh, check it out. But the Homie video is not just refuge of unknowns; it occasionally offers us precious goofing around footage from some heavy hitters. Gilbert Crocket (Alien Workshop pro, currently filming a part for the inevitably mind-blowing upcoming Vans video, possessor of unquestionably the best bow-legged style in skateboarding) for example came through with this gem in “cell-out” a no-budget scene video out of his native Richmond, Virginia filmed entirely on iPhones. And just because it’s all a bit of a laugh doesn’t mean old Gil doesn’t go hard. Just look at the ollie up the double set at 1.10.
