“Paul is just one of the many people that I photographed in St Teresa’s Gardens in the Liberties area. I hope people will come to the exhibition and get a sense of the community there, the struggle, the humour, the kindness.
Now with regeneration in its final stages, a small number of residents remain. Most of the buildings have been demolished and the occupants moved to different locations around the city.
These people are now dealing with the reality of transitioning into new neighbourhoods and establishing a new identity and sense of belonging.
I spent many years there. I hope that people that come to the show see the honesty and beauty that I saw.”
Gerry Balfe Smyth’s first solo exhibition, last breath runs in Pallas Studios until May 13.
