A space action movie, 80s film, philosophical thriller and a heartbreaking origin story of genetically engineered raccoon: James Gunn has managed to pack the closing of his trilogy with many genres and elements. The movie about the final mission of the intergalactic gag has got many positive reactions for its emotional story and visually stunning effects. Guardians of The Galaxy: Vol. 3. picks up all the members of the gang sometime living on the planet called the Nowhere (which is actually the giant skull in space), the planet they have bought from the Collector. The story is set 2-3 years after the events in Avengers: Endgame.
Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), the leader of the Guardians seems to get through hard times: he continue getting drunk because of loss of his one true love Gamora (Zoe Saldana): Gamora he loved died because of her father Thanos in the Endgame, and the “new” Gamora from the past has no memory of the Guardians and her love story with Quill at all. Rocket Racoon reflects on his traumatic memories. One day the Guardians get brutally attacked by the superhero Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), who tries to capture Rocket for the powerful villain whose plans are tied to Rocket’s past. Adam doesn’t manage to kidnap the raccoon, but Rocket is put into very serious peril: he suffers from wounds and must be operated on.
The gang finds out they can’t do it without a secret code: Rocket is a genetically engineered animal, created by the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), the mad scientist, who is obsessed with the idea of creating the perfect species. Rocket, once just a raccoon from North America, was one of his earliest experiments. To save the life of their friend, while Rocket is on life support, the Guardians decide for their final and very dangerous mission: they track the origins of Rocket, and his backstory turns out to be very emotional and heartbreaking.
Being seriously injured, Rocket sees flashbacks to his tragic past and other caged animals, space experiments of the High Revolutionary, who were brutally killed by him. They all dreamed of watching the big sky and living the normal life, but only the Rocket escaped the prison and the corporate front of his maniacal creator. The final journey of the Guardians is a big challenge for them: they don’t only risk their lives trying to be the mad villain, but need to fight for all the things they love and understand who they are.
This psychological background and emotional combination of “present-day” scenes and their flashbacks growing more and more dramatic makes their mission truly different from typical blockbuster action sequences we have seen in other superhero movies about the Avengers and X-Men. Not only did James Gunn bring out even more of the main characters that we seemingly already know from and to, but he also brought many of the secondary characters to the end of the arc with dignity. The villain the High Revolutionaryi is quite interesting and emotional, although his motives are insanely formulaic – how many times have we seen an antagonist who is bad just because he is bad and generally thinks he is a god.
Graphics in the Guardians are stunning and visually inventive: the film is a true feast for the eyes. From colorful uniforms of the villains and try, you will find in the film many mind-blowing colors and textures, pictures full of grotesque and fun. Even though that all makes the movie a bit messy, it doesn’t make The Guardians worse: it is very interesting to watch how colourful bizarre comedy is combined with heartbreaking drama. The movie soundtrack is great, however this time many tracks bring us back to the 90s.
The acting performances of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillian and Pom Klementieff, so as the brilliant voice acting of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel is very expressive and makes you discover all the characters from the other side: they are people, aliens and animals with traumas they need to explore and heal from them. The conclusion of The Guardians is not just a story about superheroes and aliens: it is the ode to humanity, friendship and love.
Is Guardians: Vol. 3 worth-watching? From our perspective, yes, and it would be the perfect film for the movie or casino evening with the best online casino Ireland or other activities. The trilogy ends exactly the way it was supposed to end – and even though I would have liked to spend a few more movies with the much-loved Guardians of the Galaxy team, every story has to have an ending.
But this is exactly the kind of ending that is worthy of such a meaningful trilogy in Marvel’s portfolio. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt so much emotion when watching movies because their scripts didn’t push “the right strings,” and James Gunn was able to play an entire symphony. Even if this movie is certainly darker in tone and emotionally deeper than the previous films, it is still an action-packed, visually off-putting and thrilling blockbuster. This movie about the Guardians isn’t perfect, much like the characters, but James Gunn has certainly put much love and emotional depth in it. An endgame to the franchise about the space misfits is just great and it doesn’t feel like it is the longest movie in the trilogy.
