The Quare Fellow

To celebrate a century since Brendan Behan’s birth, the Abbey Theatre presents this modern take on The Quare Fellow, directed by Tom CreedHaving premiered at the Pike Theatre in 1954 under the direction of Alan Simpson, this modern classic was first produced at the Abbey in 1956 (Ernest Blythe turned it down originally) and has not been staged there since 1984. It unfolds over the timeframe between the arrival in a prison (based on Mountjoy Jail) of an unnamed man who we never see, condemned to death for the murder of his brother, and his execution, with which the play ends. The top notch cast of 15, all female and non-binary actors, will perform all of the male characters, continuing Behan’s legacy of subversion, surprise and confrontation.
