my comfort and my joy: Songs from the Irish Other

At the opening of this exhibition, Irish traveller and singer Thomas McCarthy sang the very song from which this exhibition is titled. The words ‘my comfort and my joy’ were preceded by ‘where will you be buried’ but as Belfast-based artist, and musician, Seamus Harahan notes: “I filmed Thomas in the context of our shared comfort and joy in the song and music.” By documenting McCarthy and his heritage in this original commission, Harahan seeks “to look at an old weave of Irishness that hasn’t fitted with modern, plastic, Irish state ideals.”
