Shallow Relief 35mm, 2019

Audrey Blue

Just before a rather poignant downward spell of my mental health, I met Eloise, the subject. In this image, a projection of my mental status (or lack thereof) at the time emerged.

Subconsciously, I knew something was about to take a turn in my life and the lingering sensation in the photograph reflected that. For me, the image now serves as a bitter-sweet retrospective prediction.

I hadn’t realised I had mentally checked out that far at the time, to put it lightly anyway. Now that I am recovering from what might as well be described as a break down, I’m starting to really see myself in the images that aren’t even of me, I’ve just constructed them – to the point of emotional construction- to exude my presence.

This Hurts, Audrey Blue: New Irish Works runs at the Library Project until February 26.

It is also featured in the latest edition of Over Journal, the Critical Journal of Photography and Visual Culture for the 21st Century, available from The Library Project and online, €20
