Thursday Lates Returns To The National Gallery This Summer

Join the National Gallery of Ireland for a special French-themed evening as their Thursday Lates events make a summer return on Thursday 3 July. Echoing the role of Paris in the Gallery’s summer exhibition, Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone. The Art of Friendship, the event will be celebrating all things France in the national collection with a special evening of free art, music, theatre and design.

The Gallery’s major spring-summer exhibition explores the friendship and shared experiences of two pioneering Irish modernists Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone, and brings together 90 of their works of art. Featuring paintings, stained glass, and preparatory drawings, it reveals how both women were trailblazers in Irish art although remaining connected to conventional themes such as religion and landscape.

Tickets €5 after 17.00 on Thursday 03 July. Friends of the Gallery and under 18s go free. Book your tickets at the link;

Olwen Fouéré Theatre Performance

A duet for the end of the world. Two human migrants at a specific point in their journey. Are they the last humans on earth?

The renowned Irish actress and writer/director Olwen Fouéré will present duet in the spectacular Shaw Room. The short play will be performed twice; at 18.30 and at 19.30.

Pop-up concert with Dewi Jones

Dewi Jones performs Appel Interstellaire by Olivier Messiaen.

Originally created to memorialize Olivier Messiaen’s pupil and friend Jean-Pierre Guézec, a French composer who died age 36, Appel Interstellaire (“Interstellar Call”) is a solo piece for French Horn; the fourth in a suite of twelve orchestral movements known as Des Canyons aux Étoiles (“From the Canyon to the Stars”).

Dewi Jones is a Dublin based horn player and frequently works with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and Irish National Opera.

 

Meet the Makers – Irish designers on their creative process

Irish designers Kelly McDermott from Kelly Designs, Lisa McCormack from Capulet and Montague and Anna O’Byrne from All Around the Sun will be in the Gallery Shop, where each designer will give a short talk about the inspiration behind their collections based on the works of Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone, outlining their creative design process. Dandelion will be DJ-ing on the night and refreshments will be served.

 

Paint your own masterpiece with a glass of proseco

A special French edition of Tipple With Art – enjoy painting your own masterpiece inspired by the Gallery’s Collection of French art while sipping on a special French Crémant or Kir Crémant. Join French artist and historian Jérôme Courtaux for a discussion along-side the National Gallery’s Gustave Caillebotte painting Banks of a Canal, near Naples (c. 1872), before turning your own hand to the canvas. No experience necessary!

There is a charge for this event. Tickets from €55, which includes a canvas for your creation, use of all equipment and materials, plus a glass of prosecco or soft drink.

French Film Screening

Paris Asleep, 1923. This free screening is part of the 2025 Bastille Day in Ireland Film Programme.

In this acclaimed 1923 silent film directed by René Clair, a mad scientist immobilises Paris with a mysterious ray. Paris is fixed, Paris falls asleep. Only the passengers of a plane, their pilot and the guard of the Eiffel Tower remain awake, and they are going to reconquer the capital. Run time: 59min

 

Free guided tours of the National Collection

There will be a series of free guided tours throughout the night. Why not explore the work of French artists in the collection, or join a special tour of food in French art led by Blanca Valencia and Santina Kennedy.
