Black Noise

An exhibition curated by American poet and photographer Ishmael Claxton at Gallery X celebrates the diaspora across Ireland and the strength that comes from community.

Claxton believes that, in a time shaped by division, racism, and political tension, it is important to build spaces that are rooted in solidarity, visibility, and care.

“For years I have watched artists of colour in Ireland be overlooked, misrepresented, or pushed to the margins. This project comes from that frustration, but also from the need to build something better. In a time shaped by division, racism, and political tension, creating spaces of solidarity and care feels more important than ever. The deaths of George Nkencho and Yves Sakala, along with the disrespect of the Rose of Dublin, are reminders of the reality many people of colour face here.”

Black Noise is a celebration of African diaspora and wider Black communities across Ireland. Inspired partly by the spirit of AfroPunk, this exhibition explores how creativity can bring people together during moments of uncertainty and social fracture and allows viewers to recognise the strength that comes from shared experience and collective support.

Bringing together artists from different backgrounds and mediums, Claxton says that the exhibition “sees art as a tool for connection, resistance, and visibility. It is about being seen, heard, and supported on our own terms.”

The opening takes place on Thursday June 4th alongside a series of public events including a community round-table discussion, poetry night, music evening and much more.
