Father John Misty
God’s Favourite Customer
[Bella Union]
Irony plays a big role in Father John Misty’s canon.
You don’t need to go further than the album’s title, God’s Favourite Customer, to pick up on his overt bid toward characterising himself as rock and roll’s most self-deprecating figure.
On his record, Tillman flits between ambitious orchestration and pared back piano tracks to bolster his wry lyricism.
However, his latest falls short of imagination and originality, sounding far too similar to last year’s equally sprawling Pure Comedy.
