BirdWatch Ireland have made new efforts to improve biodiversity and protect seabirds in Dublin Bay.
The port oversaw the implementation of two tern nesting pontoons in their waters, which are essentially man-made platforms that allow seabirds to breed safely. They are located just alongside the Dublin Port Greenway.
Engineer Eamon McElroy, who led the project said that “Dublin Port provides a safe and well-maintained breeding site for these terns, which are among the world’s most iconic migratory seabirds”.

Arctic terns have one of the longest migration distances, travelling up to 96,000km between the Arctic and Antarctic each year.
These pontoons give them a much better chance of breeding during this incredibly treacherous journey.
