Roadmap: Dark Beauty – Harry Clarke

Posted December 19, 2019 in More

Stained-glass artist and illustrator Harry Clarke is synonymous.

Whether it is The Eve of St Agnes in the Hugh Lane Gallery, The Mother of Sorrows in the National Gallery or his church windows across the country, Clarke’s stylised iconography has been the subject of many considerations over the years.

Dark Beauty focuses on the minute detail in his windows exploring the duality of his work that sees “delicate angels juxtaposed with macabre, grotesque figures”.

It also delves into the “motifs, accessories, flora, fauna and diminutive characters” who form part of his translucence genius.

Dark Beauty: Hidden Detail in Harry Clarke’s Stained Glass by Lucy Costigan and Michael Cullen, Merrion Press, €35
