Ever since he took the reigns at Girl & Chocolate Evans has obviously been aiming to push the boundaries skate film making specifically in terms of the technology being utilized as part of the film making process so aligning himself with a company that’s focus is very much on technological advancement makes perfect sense even it is shocking to see an outsider company take in one of skateboard film makings biggest names. Though, Ty’s new home raises a number of interesting questions. And might mark a turning point in skateboard film making as a whole.

As has been widely discussed skate videos as an art form are experiencing a remarkable time of transition as more and more big name skaters are choosing to focus on stand alone solo parts to be released on line. This paired with the fact low budget full length videos being released independently of any brand in particular are taking on much greater significance than ever before is means the role of the traditional company backed skate video is being called into question. Evans’ decision to work with Brain Farm appears to be the beginning of something new and entirely different, an independent skateboarding video with a much larger budget and access to much more advanced technology than a full length associated with even skateboarding’s most successful brands.

The very idea of a video like this is an unknown quantity considering it is just so unprecedented but one has to wonder is this the first signs of a total sea change in where we get out skate media? If Brain Farm are successful with their “#BrainFarmSkate” venture then who can say what other 3rd party film makers or traditionally non skate related brands could try their hand at doing the same? The only thing that we can be almost certain about at the moment (The #BrainFarmSkate website won’t be launching for another few months) is that whatever happens it is going to be massive, overblown and expensive looking in the traditional Ty Evans sense but if it’s any good or perhaps even detrimental to skateboarding culture and film making as a whole really does remain to be seen.
