There’s something quite liberating about travelling with only what you truly need. Whilst it’s always tempting to take an extra outfit or two, and fill your carry on with various gadgets just in case you need them, taking a lighter, smarter approach can be far more convenient. If you’re heading for a long weekend away or perhaps a longer excursion, you’ll know that no matter how long you go for you will face baggage limits when flying. Not only will travelling lighter help you stay under airline limits, it will help you save money too, so where do you start?

To avoid having an overstuffed carry-on to keep any checked luggage lightweight (as well as from having to wear multiple layers on the flight), you’ll need to plan ahead and make some smart choices. Think versatile clothing items, all-in-one gadgets, and being as streamlined as possible so you can enjoy your time away without the overly heavy bags. Below are a few essential tips whilst also remembering the things you cannot travel without.

Having a Smart Traveller’s Mindset

Perhaps you already see yourself as a savvy packer, or a pro at resisting temptation when it comes to throwing in last minute extras into your luggage (especially when you know you won’t need them). If so, you’re already halfway there, but if not, then it’s all about changing your mindset. For every person that enjoys the process of packing, there will be someone that absolutely dreads it. Considering there were more than 4.2 million outbound overnight trips in Q2 2025 by Irish residents, that’s a lot of suitcases that need packing. Taking a different approach can help make packing light less stressful and more successful.

The first thing you should do is think about the destination and the time of year. Will it be tropical temperatures or something much more mild? If it is going to be hot, you probably won’t need that bulky coat for example, so this will help you to start thinking about a checklist of clothing, toiletries and other items you want to take. Will you need to take a towel, or will they be readily available at your hotel or accommodation? Is a hairdryer essential, or will this also be included in the room? It may seem obvious, but if you leave it to the last minute, you may forget to check.

Staying Covered While You Travel Light

With all the focus on the items you take and travelling light, don’t forget that travelling safely and with peace of mind is still very much essential. Your passport, emergency contact info, travel money, and insurance should all be high on your packing list.

While it’s great to trim down what you take, certain protections are non-negotiable, and travel insurance is one of them. Even the most careful travellers can face unexpected issues when away, which is why researching providers is important. Having comprehensive travel insurance from providers like Staysure will provide tailored policies that cover everything from lost baggage to flight cancellations and medical emergencies. This can make a huge difference so that if something does go wrong, you’re not left out of pocket or stranded.

Even when travelling light, a little preparation keeps your packing efficient but also gives you peace of mind once you’ve set off. When exploring destinations across Europe where healthcare or transport costs can vary, a comprehensive policy tailored to your trip offers vital reassurance. The best part? Travel insurance doesn’t take up any space in your bag. It simply travels with you. By staying insured and organised, you can enjoy the freedom of light packing while knowing you’re fully protected from life’s travel surprises.

The Essentials Only Rule: What You Really Need

Less really is more when it comes to packing light, so if you can focus on the items you’ll need every day whilst away, you can avoid packing those ‘just in case’ items.

Versatile, mix-and-match clothing that can be worn multiple times in different combinations can be a game-changer here, especially for a short trip. Think about the activities you’ll be doing (long walks, beach days, coach trips etc.) and let this guide your choices. Having neutral colours also will help to make combinations much easier. Will you need more than one pair of shoes for the evening? If not, keep it simple and choose something that can be used for the day and during the evening. Think multi-purpose wherever possible.

Toiletries are another area where many people tend to overpack, so swap full-sized bottles for travel minis or invest in reusable travel bottles so you can fill these up rather than rebuying. If you do need to tech any gadgets with you, again think of multi-use. Rather than take an e-reader as well as a tablet, try and only take one that can do both.

Before you close your bag, lay everything out and remove at least one item from each category, you’ll rarely miss it once you’re away! The aim is to travel with just enough to feel comfortable while keeping your luggage light, practical, and easy to manage.

Clothing Strategy: Style Meets Function

Of course, you may be concerned that taking less means sacrificing style, but with a bit of strategy when it comes to clothing, you can still look great.

The trick lies in creating a capsule wardrobe, which is basically a small selection of versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to suit different occasions. As already mentioned,  choosing neutral tones like black, beige, navy, or white can be a good strategy. You can then add one or two colourful accessories to brighten things up like a hat or scarf. Lightweight fabrics such as linen, cotton, and quick-dry materials are ideal for layering and easy to wash on the go.

Don’t forget about functional items too. A light rain jacket can be essential for those heading to unpredictable climates. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, paired with one smarter option for evenings out. If you’re travelling somewhere a bit warmer, focus on breathable fabrics and pieces that fold small without creasing easily. Rolling clothes instead of folding them can make a huge difference with saving space whilst also reducing wrinkles too.

If you can pack items that work together seamlessly, ensuring you’re ready for any setting without overloading your bag, you’re on the right track.

What About Going Digital?

Whilst you may prefer having a physical book to read or having your documents all printed out, these can be especially bulky. This is where embracing technology can help you travel lighter whilst also ensuring you have copies of your passport, insurance and flight details stored on your device and in the cloud just in case. Think mobile boarding passes, audiobooks or e-readers (especially if you plan to read a lot). Be sure to have your charging leads and a universal travel adapter when heading overseas, otherwise you won’t be able to keep them charged up!

Less Luggage, More Living

Feeling more confident about travelling light? As you can see, it’s not just about taking the smallest bag possible and very few items. If you plan ahead, you can start to be savvy with the items you do take. You may find once you have put more thought into what goes into your suitcase, you’ll find it easier with every trip to be ruthless with certain items.

Be sure to check your chosen airlines’ baggage policy and check out the overseas travel pages on the Ireland.ie website for more essential information. You’ll find everything from passport renewal to specific destination advice too.

Whether it’s a quick city break in Ireland or an overseas adventure, packing light allows you to move more easily, travel efficiently, and focus on enjoying yourself rather than managing heavy luggage.
