Driving Miss Daisy, the infamous comedy-drama about an elderly white woman and her black driver which won a whopping four Oscars at the 62nd Academy Awards in 1990, makes its debut on Irish stages this month at The Gaiety Theatre, opening from Tuesday 10th May to Saturday 28th May.

Producers Breda Cashe and Pay Moylan have enlisted the talents of director John P. Kelly for this version of Driving Miss Daisy, the tale of an unlikely relationship, fraught with complex racial dynamics, class politics, and anti-semitism but with a deeply human heart at its core.  The play stars Gwen Taylor, known for her work in Duty Free, Heartbeat and Coronation Street plays Daisy Wetheran, as the titular passenger that Jessica Tandy made famous and Ernest Perry Jr., (ER, Jim Carrey’s Liar Liar and The Colour of Money) as Hoke Colburn, Daisy’s African-American chauffeur. Simon Delaney, formerly of Bachelors Walk and The Good Wife, takes on the role of Wetheran’s son Boolie.

Now nearly 30 years old, Driving Miss Daisy is a heart-warming tale of an odd couple overcoming their differences, seeing through the labels that the world puts on them and recognizing each other’s essential human nature. So make your way down to the Gaiety this May, for what’s sure to be a special set of performances.

Low-priced preview shows of Driving Miss Daisy begin on Wednesday 4th May, with the shows at 7.30pm each night until Monday 9th May, before the official opening night of the run on Tuesday 10th May. Driving Miss Daisy runs until Saturday 28th May.  Performances take place each night at 7.30pm, with tickets costing €21. There are special matinee performances on Saturday 7th, Saturday 14th, Saturday 21st and Saturday 28th May, with matinee shows beginning at 2.30pm. Tickets for all shows can be found at www.ticketmaster.ie and through the Gaiety Theatre’s own Box Office at 0818-719388
