There’s a great night in store as Finnish virtuoso violinist Marja Tuhkanen-Gaynor guest curates Kaleidoscope Night’s final 2015 chapter at Bello Bar Dublin.  In doing so she has drawn together a spell-bindingly imaginative programme, with a strong Finnish-Nordic theme much in evidence,  featuring works by Jean Sibelius and lesser-known 20th century Finnish composers Einar Englund and Oskar Merikanto, played by Marja herself on violin, Lisa Dowdall (viola), John O Brien (piano) and Camilla Griehsel (mezzo soprano).

Two vocal arias by by Johann Christoph Bach, the curator’s favorite composer will open the evening’s proceedings.  “Es ist nun aus” and “Ach dass ich Wassers gnug hate”  will feature Mark Chambers (alto) in the company of Camilla Griehsel, while the music of John O Brien (piano, composer) will also feature on the double with a movement from his quartet for soprano saxophone (Carolyn Goodwin), violin, viola and cello (Aoife Burke) entitled “Towards a New Enlightenment….” and the world premiere of a new work to which the composer has given the name “The Nightingale and the Rose”.

The enviably strong flag of the Finnish folk fiddle tradition will be flown by the Biviola duo, who fly into Dublin especially for this performance. The duo comprises the eclectic Esko Jarvela on 5 string violin and Krishna Nagaraja on violin.

Irish original jazz quartet, Merima (Carolyn Goodwin (sax, vocals), Paddy Groenland (guitar), Dan Bodwell (bass) and Francesco Turrisi (accordion, percussion)) will serve up some improvisatory exploration to bring the curatin down on this fantastic evening’s fayre.
