What started as a casual Friday drawing drop-in has quietly grown roots. Climate Café, hosted at Mermaid Arts Centre, evolved from the FridayFest sessions run by artist Elida Maiques, where conversations kept circling back to climate, ecology and how we actually live. The result? A welcoming space to talk, listen and get ideas moving.
Part chat, part action lab, Climate Café connects to hands-on projects like the Mermaid Garden Project, an urban growing space where locals without gardens can plant, compost and swap horticultural know-how.
There’s a strong focus on medicinal, edible and native species, with participation and conversations helping those involved to foster new friendships over soil and seedlings.
Each Café features a guest speaker and varied activities, keeping things loose, lively and collaborative. Upcoming guest Suzie Cahn brings serious eco-cred: an ecological artist, educator and permaculture practitioner whose work blends creativity, community and climate action. Expect stories, insight and plenty to chew on — sustainably, of course.
The next event takes place on Friday Feb 20th, 11am – 12.30pm. Free, but booking is essential.
