Adventures in 16th Century Brewing

Posted 4 hours ago in Food & Drink Features

History gets boozy at Dublin Castle this month with Brewing Power: Food and Drink in Sixteenth-Century Ireland, a lively public lecture series exploring how what people ate and drank shaped daily life, power and politics in Tudor Ireland.

Drawing on fresh research from Trinity’s FoodCult project, the talks move from castle kitchens to reconstructed brew houses, blending history, science and craft.

The series culminates with Brewing the Past in the Present, an event that sees historian Dr Susan Flavin teaming up with brewer Maurice Deasy to explore what happens when archival research meets a working brewery.

Following an evening filled with stories featuring heritage grains, farmhouse brewing and the realities of recreating a sixteenth-century beer, a much anticipated guided tasting looks set to bring the past to life in what promises to be a very interesting event.

The final talk and tasting takes place at George’s Hall, Dublin Castle at 7pm on Sat February 21st.
