That January light means one thing – the return of the annual Turner Exhibition of watercolours at The National Gallery of Ireland.
Since its first unveiling in 1900, a visit to the gallery to see Turner’s luminous paintings in the first month of the year often proves an illuminating winter ritual for visitors, with many making it a regular pilgrimage.
This year’s selection includes the treasured 31 Vaughan Bequest works, and five additional Turner watercolours, alongside eight of the artist’s much-loved Liber Studiorum prints, curated by Niamh McNally.
As an added extra, this year sees the NGI join forces with Tate to borrow ninety Turner paintings which have never before been seen in Ireland. This display entitled, Turner: The Sun is God is also co-curated by Niamh MacNally. She is set to host an informal discussion on the topic of J.M.W. Turner’s artistic legacy as part of the Gallery’s regular Talk and Tea series. The event takes place from 10 – 12pm on Tuesday, Jan 10th. Tickets including a cuppa cost €5.
The Turner Watercolour Exhibition runs in the The Print Gallery, at the National Gallery of Ireland from January 1 – 31 2023. Admission Free.
