I recently popped into a few of them to ask how they were doing in face of competition from the bigger chain stores and the future for them in the face of the iPod. All agreed that although, in most cases, they could not compete price-wise with the bigger stores, they could hold their own because of the mostly specialist stock they carry.

Opinions varied about iPod, some saw it as a good thing whilst others saw it as their inevitable death knell. Whatever the future holds, it is wonderful to see such variety available on our streets and long may there be stores in which we can spend countless hours in the pursuit of glory. A purist will always prefer to squander his or her money in a smaller store than in one of the larger ones finding it more authentic to do so. The buzz just ain’t the same in the larger chain stores. You feel shifty and suspicious if you spend longer than twenty minutes in one.

This musical conveyer belt holds no mystery and its function is to churn out the latest noise and little else. There is no real soul for that, you need to look in the little shop around the corner. Of course there may be another reason for shopping at your local music traders. In doing so you may indeed be stopping Bono from assuming world domination.

Yes dear reader, darker forces may be at work here. We have already seen how Bono has befriended the governments of the world and how U2 have brought out their own cooler than cool iPod. What’s this evil pixie in store for us next? Mind control I fear, he plans to make us all dance to the beat of his own merry tune and god knows what else. We must stop this madness before things really get out of hand, burn your iPod and return to your local shop before it is too late.
