Once upon a time there were as many as twenty wallpaper shops plying their trade in the city, seven of which could be found on Talbot Street.
With the imminent closure of Gerry Keane’s, Dublin’s last remaining dedicated paint and wallpaper supplier, locals are wondering what’s next for the iconic building.
Recent years have seen its next door neighbour, itself once a 19th-century wallpaper shop, reinventing itself as a pub. The sign above the door remains constant, serving as a reminder that back in 1861 it was the go-to spot for some beautiful William Morris designs, samples of which can be seen in the basement, where they have been carefully preserved by the present day owners.

These days the shop is a great spot for music, pints, and pizzas by Ceantar. The basement is home to events run by Electronic Music Club Darkment, while upstairs the pub hosts a series of cracking trad sessions on Sunday nights.
Deals include three pizzas and three pints for the price of two on Thursdays, with a range of student specials also available.
Make your way through the confession box that doubles as the entrance, pull up a pew, and enjoy the service.
