October 22nd sees Grammy Award-winning pianist Francesco Turrisi bringing his new labum ‘Vuci’ to the stage, treating his audience to an immersive multimedia journey through Sicily, migration and memory.
Rooted in his childhood experiences of the historic Italian island, Turrisi’s gorgeous new album explores his family’s departure from Sicily alongside more recent stories of people arriving to its shores.
Expect solo piano compositions interwoven with mid-20th-century Sicilian archival recordings, ranging from work songs to lullabies, alongside Turrisi’s homage to the Sicilian language, featuring poetry in Sicilian and English, presented on the night via pre-recorded readings by Ester Pantano, Nino Provenzano and acclaimed actor John Turturro.
Created with acclaimed video artist Laura Sheeran, the live show adds archival photographs and footage of traditional tuna fishing, or tonnara, to create a richly atmospheric portrait of Sicilian life, identity and belonging.
Afterwards, Turrisi joins Kate Ellis for a conversation about Vuci, followed by a Q&A.
A deeply personal meeting of music, migration, language and visual storytelling, the album launch takes place at the Project Arts Space Upstairs, on Thursday October 22nd.
