Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Director: James Gunn

Talent: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Dwayne Johnson

Released: 28th April

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does precisely what a sequel should, building on the strengths of the first film while trying something new. If it all turns out to be a little underwhelming in the end, the fault lies perhaps not so much with returning writer/director James Gunn and his excellent cast as with the current oversaturation of the superhero genre. Nevertheless, this is still a perfectly enjoyable trip to the cinema.

The story this time deals with the mysterious parentage of Peter Quill (Pratt), son of a human mother and, as it turns out, a father that could be best described as a living planet, played with roguish charm by Kurt Russell. The script deals with themes of family and identity in a more than superficial way while also finally bucking the long-standing trend of bland villains in Marvel movies. The soundtrack is predictably great, Dave Bautista steals the show once again as Drax, and the film never wears out its welcome. Pretty good, then, just not amazing.
