SUMMARY:Prohibition – Gatsby’s Mansion
DESCRIPTION:The sensuous ‘Roaring Twenties’ is being toasted by Film Fatale at this Prohibition – Gatsby’s Mansion party at IMMA. “Expect flowing giggle juice\, shimmering dresses\, dapper gents\, dazzling fan dancers and the Film Fatale Follies — the epitome of 1920s glamour — as they blaze the stage.” The perfect compliment to the widely acclaimed summer run of the immersive adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal jazz-age novel in the Gate Theatre. \nMake sure to note this is strictly a 1920s/1930s event — the moll at the door won’t let you in if you ain’t dressed in vintage style\, so put on your vintage glad rags and flaunt your inner Daisy Buchanan or Jay Gatsby\, or come as a gangster or flapper. \n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Riverdance
DESCRIPTION:1993 seems like a far and distant land. But this\, among other things\, was when Riverdance was born. I was there at the rehearsals the night before it aired to the world from Millstreet\, a small town in North West Cork. Needless to say there were spine shivers at the energy and finesse at what we were witnessing. Mind-blowing is a fair summation. And this sense of awe is what has sustained its juggernaut existence across the globe ever since. 11\,500 performances and been seen live by over 25 million people in over 467 venues worldwide in 47 countries across 6 continents has resulted in a fortune for its devisers  John McColgan and Moya Doherty and connected a global audience with a dash of Irish culture. Bringing it all back home for a summer run is a bona fide crowd-pleaser too. \nRuns until September 3rd \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Statue for Bill Clinton
DESCRIPTION:Dublin-based theatre production company\, Verdant Productions presents “A Statue for Bill Clinton”\, a true Irish comedy\, about the visit of President Bill Clinton to Ireland in 1998. \nWritten by Tom McEnery\, author\, businessman and former Mayor of San Jose\, California\, and directed by Paul Meade\, the play is set in Ballybunion\, Co. Kerry.  Based on the true story of a local group intent on inviting the then President of the United States of America\, Bill Clinton to the town of Ballybunion. Irish comedy by Tom McEnery\, about the visit of Bill Clinton to Ireland \nA core group of residents hatch a cunning plan to unveil the world’s first statue to the leader of the free world during his visit to “The Kingdom” of Kerry.  However\, well publicised events in the Oval Office with a certain intern\, have put his visit in jeopardy.  As if this was not enough\, something unexpected has happened to the statue.  How will this affect events in Ballybunion as it awaits immortality on the world stage?  As Bill Clinton himself said: “You just have to keep swinging and know it will all even out!” \nIn advance of his arrival in Dublin\, Tom McEnery said\, “I am thrilled that ‘A Statue for Bill Clinton” debuts in Dublin\, Ireland this week.  This particularly tells a tale about how a town on the edge of the Atlantic fights for its self-respect and very survival. As in all such stories\, there is real humour to many of the characters and incidents.  Into this mix\, President Bill Clinton arrives with the drama swirling around the peace process and his possible impeachment.  Almost each and every incident is just as it actually happened on that day.” \nRuns until Sunday August 13th \n

SUMMARY:Crestfall

Marked by the Irish writer’s trademark style of muscular and direct dialogue\, Crestfall follows the intertwined fortunes of three damaged women. The director for this production\, Annabelle Comyn\, has worked closely with O’Rowe on its reworking\, and it will be interesting to see a new presentation of this sometimes controversial play and its depiction of female sexuality. \n2.30pm matinee\, 8pm main staging. \nRuns until August 12.

SUMMARY:VA-JAY-JAY DAY
DESCRIPTION:“We believe that it is time to come together to educate\, demystify\, and celebrate the holiest of holes\, the PUSSY!! Yoni\, vulva\, twat\, cunt\, pussy\, vag or snatch – We don’t care what you call it\, just come and get the facts. \nVa-Jay-Jay Day is an educational and community building event based on the topic of pussy\, wombs\, menstruation\, fertility and the female reproductive system. We are gathering around the common experience of having bodies that were assigned female at birth\, regardless of gender identity. \nAfter thousands of years of womb shaming we are calling in a safe and private space to speak about our anatomy with others who share our experience. This is a place to go deep and to heal while celebrating that fact that we have the most glorious life force and we deserve to know how to use it ♥” \nWe will be discussing: \n– Cervical Self Exam:\nWe will do a live demonstration and help others to do self exam for themselves\, too if they’d like! No pressure to participate if you don’t want to. There will be speculums for use (or sale if you’d like to keep one for future use)\, but please bring your own flashlight and mirror if you can. \n– Fertility Awareness Method:\nBreaking free from invasive hormonal and internal birth control methods like the IUD\, the shot\, the pill\, etc. and using natural methods to chart your cycle and understand the signs your body is giving you. \n– How to Stay Out of the Gynecologists Office:\nHome remedies for common vaginal conditions\, herbal alternatives\, and a Q&A where we can all share our experience with one another \n+++++++ \nCarol Downer (Los Angeles\, California) is a founder of the Women’s Self Help Movement. She is a feminist activist who focuses on women’s reproductive rights and helped open 20+ women’s health clinics across the USA in the 1970’s. She is a icon of the second wave of feminism and a pioneer of abortion rights. \nCorinne Loperfido (Los Angeles\, California) is an event producer who wants to create containers for community to grow and ideas to spread. She believes that knowledge is power and the more that women can learn about their own bodies\, the more that we can break free from the chains of the medical industrial complex and take care of ourselves.

SUMMARY:ROSC 50\, 1967 – 2017
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 50th anniversary of the first ROSC exhibition in Ireland\, IMMA (The Irish Museum of Modern Art) and NIVAL (The National Visual Art Library) will present a wide-ranging archival exhibition\, including catalogues\, photographs\, news footage\, and exhibition reviews and reports\, alongside first-person accounts and innovative reflections by Irish artists. The ROSC exhibitions were Ireland’s first exposure to international contemporary art\, before IMMA was established\, offering the Irish public a chance to engage with artists like Cy Twombly\, Mark Rothko and Laurie Anderson. Often controversial\, the once-every-four-years ROSC exhibitions were pivotal in influencing a generation of Irish artists and this exhibition offers a chance to reflect on their legacy.

SUMMARY:Francesco Tristano
DESCRIPTION:He’s a Boiler Room bunny\, he’s recorded with Carl Craig and Derrick May\, he’s a cool cat blending  classical and electronica and he’s bringing his exhilarating Piano 2.0 show to the Concert Hall tonight as part of The Dublin International Piano Festival 2017 \n \nTristano trained as a classical pianist at the esteemed Juilliard School in Manhattan\, and the great city of New York in the late 1990s was where his obsession with electronic music began. His desire to merge his love of classical piano and dance music resulted in the genre-defying debut Not For Piano in 2007\, which incorporated covers from the iconic Detroit house and techno scenes including the classic ‘Strings Of Life’ by Derrick May. \n \n“The fact is\, Bach can sound great played on synthesisers\, too\, so why would Carl Craig or Derrick May’s music not sound great on a piano?” remarked Tristano. No stranger to cross-genre collaboration\, Tristano has worked with both May and Craig; most recently on the latter’s album Versus. He will perform the solo version of the album highlight ‘The Melody’ in Piano 2.0. \n \nA master of sonic experimentation\, combining pianistic perfection and earth-shattering electronic textures\, Tristano’s work is continuously evolving and defying the expectations of the music world. Amongst the scores of Johann Sebastian Bach\, Frescobaldi\, Rameau and others\, Tristano adds layers of magical minimalism with the latest production tools\, sequencers and synthesisers. \nThe Sony recording artist possesses the ability to highlight common elements of both Baroque piano styles and electronic music\,  creating mesmerising work where the two meet. His commitment to innovation makes him one of the most exciting pianists working today. It’s rare to find a classical artist influenced by both Bach and Daft Punk. For him\, the classification of music is far too restrictive.

SUMMARY:The Water Orchard
DESCRIPTION:A new show from raucous\, Dublin-based theatre ensemble Collapsing Horse. An ageing matriarch presides over a crumbling estate that produces water of fine vintage; she won’t let the next generation fulfill their vision of bringing the place back from the brink of bankruptcy by turning the water orchard into a brunch garden. With shades of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard\, this serious comedy merges the ensemble’s usual brand of farce and slapstick with unsettling audio visual elements to push the boundaries of what humour can do. SUMMARY:Belle and Sebastian
DESCRIPTION:Scottish Indie Pop legends Belle & Sebastian return to Dublin. \nThe best pop groups want to change the world. They want to leave an imprint that no one forgets\, to do more than check out as a minor statistic in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles. They want to change the world of pop\, and to engage with the politics of pop. Belle & Sebastian have re-invented the pop festival; they signed to a tiny independent label but still beat Steps to a BRIT\, before sweeping into the Top 40\, then the Top 20. They’ve brought their lost sixties heroine\, Evie Sands\, over to play a show in Glasgow. They’ve sold out a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. And\, in 2014\, they cut an album – their ninth – called Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance\, that blends electro-glide\, baroque balladry\, and giant-sized Europop hooks. They deserve several accolades\, each of which are rare for any band in 2014 – Belle & Sebastian are unique\, unpredictable\, and fiercely loved. \nPart of their appeal is that Belle and Sebastian have always given the impression of being completely unaware that they are even famous. Emerging in the late nineties\, they appeared to be both press and camera-shy\, but also entirely self-contained; they seemed to have a secret\, something built around books and films\, and yet were happy to share the love\, stopping just short of writing individual songs for their fans. And their fans\, naturally\, became obsessive\, formed their own bands\, started their own loosely affiliated clubs\, radio shows and websites. A secret gang – who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? \nBut then again if you’re a band who works with Trevor Horn\, Carey Mulligan and Norah Jones\, you’re probably not content to lurk in the tiny shadow offered by a seven-inch single on Postcard. And if you end up on the soundtrack to Adam Curtis’s The Power Of Nightmares\, or Todd Solondz’s Storytelling\, as well as Juno\, then there’s going to be more than a little grit and grain to your music than adjectives like “shy” and “fragile” might suggest. \nBelle & Sebastian have always understood well the art of song structure. They write precise and elegantly constructed melodies\, and have never skimped with middle eights\, bridges and codas. Belle & Sebastian have stood as something different right from the beginning. Let’s have a quick poke around the previous eighteen years. Debut album Tigermilk (1996) was the product of a Stow College music business class that drummer Richard Colburn was taking; just 1\,000 vinyl copies were pressed. In spite of huge major label interest (immortalised on the track Seymour Stein on their third album\, The Boy With The Arab Strap) they initially signed to the tiny Jeepster label\, then later to Rough Trade and now have their first worldwide deal with Matador Records. The key to their appeal was a sense of community. Their self-curated Bowlie festival would evolve into All Tomorrow’s Parties; they became central to a nascent message board culture\, and a US loop of labels and fanzines (even writing a song about one\, Chickfactor) that adored their music\, their stance\, and their imagery. \nIn Britain they famously upset the applecart in 1999 by winning the “Best Newcomers” BRIT award through the votes of their fans\, faced accusations of vote rigging\, and in the process have got the backs of the tabloids up (sample Daily Record headline: “Belle Boy’s At It Again”). So\, clearly\, they’ve been doing something right. \nThere’s nothing obviously tabloid-baiting on Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance\, though the bold step onto the dancefloor is bound to raise some eyebrows. “Be popular – play pop\, and you will win my love” is the final line on ‘The Everlasting Muse’\, and is the lyrical heart of an album about love\, the love of music\, and the power of pop. Given that Murdoch has openly declared himself pro-bubblegum before\, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that ‘Enter Sylvia Plath’\, ‘The Book Of You’ and ‘Play For Today’ have keyboard hooks that recall Scandinavian pop machines past and present. The filmic loves\, kitchen sink imagery and baroque touches are still there\, too\, don’t worry. \nIt’s all about trusting in the restorative power of pop music. If you’d trust anyone to write a great Europop song about Sylvia Plath\, you’d trust Belle & Sebastian. \nwww.belleandsebastian.com \n

SUMMARY:Di Verse
DESCRIPTION:“I have been experiencing a lot lately\, human behaviour that reflects a sentiment of fear\, hate and control towards diversity. It has shocked me. It has effected me so much so that I have been forced to question everything we stand for as a species. \nThis is because\, in my time here I have only ever experienced diversity as a strength. In fact I have sought her out\, and when I have encountered her I have grown. Diversity is knowledge\, evolution and choice. \nWhen I talk about diversity I don’t mean that of ethnicity. I am referring to the diversity of human experience had by each of us. As much as we are all the same beings\, we have each had our own unique conditioning and cumulation of experience. 7 Billion of us may be the same\, but we are all different. \nWhen reflecting on the images I have captured I observe vast differences at certain stages of my evolution through the medium. I have embraced these difference by letting the work speak to me with no over baring curation.” – Mark William Logan \nMark William Logan is a Dublin born photographer who spent the last three years travelling North America\, Ecuador\, Peru\, The Amazon & Hawaii. With a background in music and experiential he has found his Love in 35mm film. He loves most the intention the medium brings and strives to force people to ask questions through his work. \nExhibition runs July 19-26 in the Tara Building

SUMMARY:TORCH SONG TRILOGY
DESCRIPTION:“Yeah. I’m among the last of a dying breed. Well\, once the E.R.A. and gay civil rights bills have been passed\, me and mine will be swept under the carpets like the blacks done to Amos\, Andy\, and Aunt Jemima. That’s all right. With a voice and a face like this\, I’m not worried. I can always drive a cab. And that\, chillun’\, is called power. Be it gay\, black\, or flowered it always comes down to the survival of the majority.” \nHarvey Fierstein\, in the play The International Stud (1978)\, later part of Torch Song Trilogy (1982) \n……………….. \nThe film is an adaptation of three one-act plays on the same character\, Arnold Beckoff\, all together four hours long. The film was scripted by the original author\, the multitalented Harvey Fierstein\, who starred in both the theatre production and the adaptation (Mathew Broderick played Arnold’s son on stage and Arnold’s husband in the movie). The film opens like the play\, with a monologue directly to the audience\, and after that the stage is forgotten in all but in the talk-heavy story. The film omits (regrettably) a hilarious sex scene in a darkroom\, as well as (mercifully) the endless discussion of Arnold’s lover Ed’s ‘problematic’ bisexuality. The adaptation also invents a (rather sweet) first-meeting scene between Arnold and partner David. \nA ‘torch song’ is a melodramatic rendition of a love story\, romance on an epic scale\, and our story is concerned with the five loves in torch-song singer Arnold Beckoff’s life: Ed\, Alan\, his son\, his mother\, and himself. This is a positive portrait of a gay person who respects himself and demands respect\, from the first second of the film to the last. Shocking to think how rare this is in the stories others have told us and we have told ourselves. Arnold’s whip-tongued queen\, maddeningly closeted lover Ed\, dangerously-perfect partner Alan\, Arnold and Alan’s lovable-rogue foster-son David\, and Arnold’s dark tornado of a mother… all sound like excruciating clichés on paper\, but in fact they feel so real that you will think you are standing in that dressing room\, that alley-way\, that cemetery\, that cabin in the country\, and that sitting-room. Both the play and the film are about parenting too –about the trick of breaking with the past\, knowing you are cursed to drag it along with you. This is the conundrum of film adaptations themselves\, and if you wish to be enlightened\, look no further than the great Anne Bancroft as the ‘ma’ of professional drag artist Arnold. He may be one of a kind\, but is it a coincidence that she comes across as the ultimate drag queen? \n

SUMMARY:Hot Press: Covers exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Hot Press is 40! While its impact and influence on youth culture in particular has waned considerably in this century\, there is no denying it’s played its part in our emergence as a multi-national and open society. The fact it’s still around is testimony to its shrewd management by the Stokes clan. This is a brilliant look back at its evolution. There is a U2 wall and all the obvious heavy hitters from the rock scene but many of the thrills lie in the one-off cover stars\, our national controversies or the bizarre sight of Radio One DJ Ronan Collins in a satirical cover rip-off of The Sunday World back in 1984.

DESCRIPTION:This is an all-immersive razzle-dazzle start to Selina Cartmell’s tenure at the Gate\, a theatre in which philandering and bacchanalia has always been a close subject matter for its productions.
