DESCRIPTION:Coming to Whelan’s this Friday\, September 15th\, is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Like previous Clap Your Hands Say Yeah records\, The Tourist nods to Ounsworth’s musical heroes—a group that includes artists such as John Cale\, Robert Wyatt\, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. However\, this album also shows a natural progression from previous records. “Better Off” and “The Vanity Of Trying” are lush\, keyboard-augmented songs\, while “A Chance To Cure” and “Ambulance Chaser” are rhythmically askew\, and the sighing “Loose Ends” is delicate\, acoustic-based folk-rock. \nThe Tourist emerged from a period where Ounsworth was doing a lot of intense soul-searching\, and processing personal events that irrevocably shaped his life and future. But although most of these songs came together during this time of reflection\, he considers the record to be cathartic—an exhale of sorts\, rather than a collection of songs where he was indulging in self-pity or letting things stagnate or fester. \n \n“I am a relatively solitary person and seem to work best alone\,” he says. “I do count on others to help the project as the process of making and releasing an album moves forward\, but if it doesn’t match what I have in mind\, it’s hard for me to really be there for it. I guess this is one reason why the project has been independent all this time. Trust me\, I understand that thinking this way is both an asset and a liability.”

DESCRIPTION:Dovecote is the moniker used by songwriter Niall Colfer\, who is joined by guitarist/producer Sean Coleman\, bassist Mark Kelly and drummer Barry Smullen. The band bring together their blend of alternative folk/rock to their debut\, critically acclaimed eponymous debut album. \nThe release of the album saw Dovecote receiving radio play on all the major Irish stations (including the prestigious ‘Album of the Week’ on RTE Radio 1)\, as well being the focus of features in Hot Press and the Irish Independent. DESCRIPTION:For just 1 day\, Dubliners will take their creativity to the streets\, occupy parking spaces and transform them into parklets in over 20 locations in Dublin City. \nDublin Park(ing) Day is a not -for-profit community event supported by Dublin City Council as part of EU Mobility Week\, a series of events promoting better mobility. \nPark(ing) Day‘s mission is “intended to promote creativity\, civic engagement\, critical thinking\, unscripted social interactions\, generosity and play” – Rebar. \nWhat is Park(ing) Day? \nFaolán Bashford from Dublin Park(ing) Day said\, “Park(ing) Day is about re-imagining the possibilities of the urban landscape. The importance of good\, livable streets is integral to the success of our towns and cities. We are encouraging everyone to take part\, to see what can be done to animate and enrich the city”. \nPark(ing) Day is a free annual open-source global event where citizens\, artists\, and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “Park(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project was initiated by art and design studio Rebar in 2005 in San Francisco with a single metered parking space and has evolved into a global movement. The dancers thrust us into a dynamic and vital physical exploration of how we respond to media and whether individuals can safeguard who they are when identity shifts\, is reshaped\, and shifts again in a time when nationhood is transformable\, languages meld\, and the news is incessant. \n  \nEverything Now combines the formality and rigour of highly disciplined dance with elements of a 1960s happening to explore the pervasive\, potentially damaging influences of Western society\, of being consumed and consuming\, while recognising that joy is still to be found. \n  \nThe piece is accompanied by powerful new music composed by Brian Hogan\, bass player and co-writer/arranger with Kila\, and leader of Preacher’s Son; and the support of a laughing/shouting/silent multicultural chorus.

DESCRIPTION:Graphic Studio Gallery presents INFUSIONS\, the debut solo exhibition of Ailbhe Barrett. James Hanley of RHA will officially open the show on the 7th of September at 6pm. He has said the following of Ailbhe Barrett’s work: \n“Nine large prints – a mix of etchings\, monoprints with etchings\, and etchings with carborundum – feature alongside two original oil paintings. Country landscape predominates\, with one exception of an evocative view outward from Limerick train station\, the tracks slowly dissolving in the creeping mist\, form disappearing into the ether in the manner of Monet’s similar manifestations of light and steam enveloping stone and iron. \n \nBut it is in those rural landscapes that Ailbhe’s star shines. It is here that her innate artistic sensibility finds voice. This is the world of her childhood and she knows it from its winter light to its summer sun\, and from its hills to its meadows. \nHer images are not\, however\, the landscapes of a locale or a particular place\, but rather the suggestion of a mood\, the evocation of a place that captures her imagination. It is not surprising that Turner was an early inspiration in the way he transformed the world into something far more atmospheric than it is by his bravura manipulation of paint. So too with Ailbhe. Two trees side by side\, hedgerows and fields\, a bend in the river\, distant mountains shimmer in a haze of memory made manifest by her mastery\, with aquatints\, sugarlift and spitbite amplifying her dexterous line.” \n

They’ll discuss the making of their self-titled debut album\, and all the triumphs (and tribulations) involved in the process. In a strange turn of events\, Gladys\, the group’s enigmatic front-woman\, has not been heard from in the six months following the album’s release. Rumours abound. Some say she is now a snorkeling instructor in Palau. Others say that she is simply down in Cork. \nPerhaps the two remaining Gutter Stars might shed some light on the mystery. Or perhaps deepen it. DESCRIPTION:Well into it’s third year\, Whelans Singer songwriter night ‘Song Cycle’ continues to offer a platform for local and non local acts to experiment\, sing and share in the friendly informal setting of Whelan’s front window. Taking our cues from our favourite artists musings on the creative process (Van Dyke Parks lends us the title from his seminal 1967 opus) this night offers artists a fresh new stage to breath life into songs\, experiment with ideas or simply just play for the sheer enjoyment of it. \nThe Format of Song Cycle has developed a little since moving downstairs earlier this year.  Regular hosts Ollie Cole and John Byrne help us curate the evening and take part as well by performing some of their works in progress as well as old standards. Needless to say an impromptu session is never too far away if some of their special guests feel like playing a song or two. \nSong Cycle takes place in Whelan’s front bar every Monday\, admission is free and all are welcome to play.

On Thursday\, August 24th MART will present ‘Freedom of Movement\,’ an exhibition of film work by renowned German artists Nina Fischer and Maroan el Sani.MART first introduced the work of Fischer & el Sani to Ireland in 2014 when the artists presented film works ‘Narita Field Trip’ and ‘Spelling Dystopia’ in an exhibition curated by Barry Kehoe. Both pieces were created when the artists were Associate Professors at the School of Art and Design in Sapporo City University in Japan and explored tensions that arise between the forces of globalisation and specific local narratives.Always keen to build upon established relationships with international artists\, MART has invited Fischer and El Sani back to Dublin for the presentation of two recent film installations ‘Identity’s Rule of Three’ (2015) and ‘Freedom of Movement’ (2017) These films pose questions on various aspects of human identity and society\, the limits of geographical\, artistic and social structure\, and race relations.Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani are visual artists and directors who have worked collaboratively since the 1990s and both live and work in Berlin. DESCRIPTION:Kirkos Ensemble and the Experimental Film Society are proud to present Wilderness Notes\, an exciting collaboration bringing together two of Ireland’s most innovative contemporary arts group from the fields of music and film. \nWilderness Notes will feature premieres of 3 new films by EFS filmmakers Rouzbeh Rashidi\, Maximilian Le Cain and Vicky Langan\, and Atoosa Pour Hosseini\, created in tandem with new compositions by young Irish composers Barry O’Halpin\, Sean Ó Dálaigh\, and Robert Coleman which will be performed live by the Kirkos Ensemble. \nThe three films that comprise Wilderness Notes all explore psychic\, territorial and technological margins. Isolated characters\, all somehow locked into masks or fixed personae\, navigate desolate zones between dimensions where a sense of being physically adrift and at risk is mapped onto a corresponding inner state. But they are not only adrift in space\, they are equally adrift in time. Making experimental use of several outdated moving image formats\, notably Super-8 and VHS\, Wilderness Notes summons up ghosts from an abandoned future\, taking its cues from the western\, the nightmare of nuclear holocaust and the masks of ancient theatre. \nAll three of Wilderness Notes’ musical compositions were written to complement EFS’s filmmaking approach. Barry O’Halpin’s is derived from the electromagnetic spectra of 5 chemical elements\, resulting in an ethereal and almost alien set of harmonies and moving parts\, while Sean Ó Dálaigh pits the ensemble against undulating sine waves and introduces an element of choice into structural repetitions to create a vibrant microtonal universe. In contrast\, Kirkos co-director Rob Coleman’s contribution is a song cycle\, setting poetry by American poet Morri Creech for voice\, ensemble and electronics\, examining the states of consciousness that flash beneath the waking mind.  \nFor Wilderness Notes the Kirkos Ensemble will be Miriam Kaczor [flute]\, Léonie Bluett [clarinet]\, Máire Carroll [piano]\, Jane Hackett\, Cillian Ó Breacháin [violins]\, Nathan Sherman [viola]\, Yseult Cooper Stockdale [cello]\, Barry O’Halpin [electric guitar] and Sarah Thursfield [voice]. \nTickets here:

DESCRIPTION:The Project Arts Centre will be showcasing their first exhibition from their new Curator\, Lívia Páldi\, opening on Thursday 31 August between 5.30-7.30pm. \nThe Museum of Modern Comedy in Art (MoMCo) – A Proposal is either an artwork in the guise of a speculative museum or a museum dressed up as a contemporary installation. Which of the above it will be\, is yet to be seen. \nMoMCo is dedicated to highlighting\, researching and mediating the hidden\, comedic aspects of modern and contemporary art. The classical notion of reckless\, avant-garde bravado has been largely debunked\, not least for its implicit sexism and open Eurocentrism. But the underlying comedic mechanisms deserve re-examination. \nFor this first exhibition\, MoMCo is presented in the form of a tentative historical chart and a series of clay figurines depicting key-moments in bona fide art history. MoMCo is also proud to present Resuscitations\, its first temporary exhibition of contemporary art\, comprising video works by Agnieszka Polska (PL)\, Roee Rosen (IL)\, Sally O’Reilly (UK)\, Gernot Wieland (D)\, and Olav Westphalen (D/US). \n  \nOlav Westphalen is a German-American artist whose work frequently takes the form of games\, entertainment or cartoons. He exposes the cultural blind spots and hypocrisies of the social and cultural contexts he inhabits. He plays both sides of the high-low divide\, producing mass-media comedy and cartoons while showing in museums and galleries such as The Whitney Museum\, ICA London\, The Swiss Institute NY\, Moderna Museet\, Stockholm\, Brandenburgischer Kunstverein\, Museum Fridericianum.
