SUMMARY:The Museum of Modern Comedy in Art - A Proposal
DESCRIPTION:The Project Arts Centre will be showcasing their first exhibition from their new Curator\, Lívia Páldi\, opening on Thursday 31 August between 5.30-7.30pm. \nThe Museum of Modern Comedy in Art (MoMCo) – A Proposal is either an artwork in the guise of a speculative museum or a museum dressed up as a contemporary installation. Which of the above it will be\, is yet to be seen. \nMoMCo is dedicated to highlighting\, researching and mediating the hidden\, comedic aspects of modern and contemporary art. The classical notion of reckless\, avant-garde bravado has been largely debunked\, not least for its implicit sexism and open Eurocentrism. But the underlying comedic mechanisms deserve re-examination. \nFor this first exhibition\, MoMCo is presented in the form of a tentative historical chart and a series of clay figurines depicting key-moments in bona fide art history. MoMCo is also proud to present Resuscitations\, its first temporary exhibition of contemporary art\, comprising video works by Agnieszka Polska (PL)\, Roee Rosen (IL)\, Sally O’Reilly (UK)\, Gernot Wieland (D)\, and Olav Westphalen (D/US). \n  \nOlav Westphalen is a German-American artist whose work frequently takes the form of games\, entertainment or cartoons. He exposes the cultural blind spots and hypocrisies of the social and cultural contexts he inhabits. He plays both sides of the high-low divide\, producing mass-media comedy and cartoons while showing in museums and galleries such as The Whitney Museum\, ICA London\, The Swiss Institute NY\, Moderna Museet\, Stockholm\, Brandenburgischer Kunstverein\, Museum Fridericianum. He lives and works in Stockholm. \n  \nThe Museum of Modern Comedy – A Proposal (MoMCo) runs at Project Arts Centre from 1 September to 21 October 2017.

SUMMARY:Pop-up: The Crate
DESCRIPTION:Like a wildflower sprouting into riotous life\, 5 Dame Lane is being visited by a new\, temporary and thus all the more exciting pop-up store\, called The Crate. The product of flora-fanatics Claire and Steph\, who describe it as “an online Irish flower and styling business\,” The Crate weaves together their love of design\, fashion\, and flowers. Their products look like the bouquets of forest brides\, elf queens; leafy things with little explosions of colour. \n \nFor easy decision-making\, The Crate has minimised on choice\, simplifying flower buying by offering one uniquely styled bunch\, in three sizes\, at three pricepoints. \nThe selection changes weekly\, preventing you from getting the same flowers twice and adhering to the call to fluidity that nature strictly demands. \nSensitive to the developing focus on the environmental impact of consumer products\, The Crate flowers are uniquely packaged in eco-Kraft paper and string\, with personalised fun cards thoughtfully designed to create a story between you and those that you care for. This dedication to detail is what makes The Crate unique\, tending to each customer with supreme care and thoughtfulness. \nThe Crate’s pop-up blooms on until this Thursday\, August 31st\, but you can still order online from them here.

SUMMARY:Review: Soundcheck at The Science Gallery
DESCRIPTION:When I walk into the Soundcheck exhibition at Trinity’s Science Gallery\, a wall-sized blackboard is scribbled with chalk where visitors are asked to write their favourite sounds. “My children’s laughter\,” writes one person; “Lana Del Rain\,” quips another. Soundcheck continues this invitation to personal interaction throughout the exhibition; all lies dormant until some curious individual speaks into the microphone in “Chit Chat\,” an installation that translates the slightest vocalization into birdsong\, and a muttered “hello” becomes a round of morning chirps. In “Baloica\,” a set of swings are fixed to a Kinect motion-sensor which responds to each oscillation with a melodic note\, and the higher you swing the more complex the sounds become\, turning an everyday activity into an exercise in creative experimentation. Brenda Hutchinson’s “Giant Musical Box” challenges the concept of what sounds “good\,” having tuned the brass bars to quarter tones\, and allows those with zero musical training to strike a pleasant chord.  \n \n Upstairs\, there is a kitchen stocked with utensils rigged to transform any bang or tap to musical percussion: a ceramic bowl becomes a steel drum\, stirring beans in a pan becomes the audible equivalent to neon-lit rain. In “Theremin Tapestry\,” historical traditions of weaving are combined with theremin technology to create a piece of art that answers motion with song. Strictly untouchable\, this installation demands restraint and a reflection on the relationship between the senses. Although each installation is spitefully unique in its own way\, one commonality shared with all is challenging ideas of what music is or can be. “Star Struck” presents a pin-ball machine as a musical instrument\, and features a four-person multiplayer play field framed by bass guitars. The game features targets that produce stochastic compositions – randomly generated scores created by controlling an array of audio effects – that integrate pinball gaming into compositional construction. Not all installations include teamwork\, however. “Ashes to Ashes” is a nightmare soundscape carved from virtual uranium instruments\, crowding into the listener’s ears through headphones. Evoking nuclear fallout and stars’ theatrical self-destruction\, this installation is a journey from bleak\, cavernous echoes to high-pitched swoons tipping into hysteria. This might be what you hear when you put your ear to a black hole\, or if you woke to see the moon crashing down through the night. \n Unity\, isolation; sound can do both\, whether it’s drawing disparate groups together to make noise in a kitchen or needling in on the individual. What you take from Soundcheck depends entirely on who else is there – cacophony if it’s busy\, sparsely-punctuated silence if it’s quiet. Either  will make you wonder at these peculiar vibrations we call sound\, and at the possibilities that sprout from music’s ongoing love-affair with technology. \n \nwords: John Vaughan.

SUMMARY:The Grove 50th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Almost every teenager growing up on the Northside of Dublin\, and beyond\, between 1967 and 1997\, will have heard of\, the now legendary\, alternative disco known as The Grove. Most of them will have gone\, at least once\, to find out what all the fuss is about. This year\, The Grove celebrates it’s 50th anniversary. The simple fact that we mark the 50th anniversary of this school disco says it all. \nOn the afternoon of February 19th\, 1967\, in the hall of the Belgrove Football Club (from which the disco gets it’s name)\, a group of Clontarf locals set up for\, what they considered to be\, just another Clontarf-based social event. Little did they know\, that this was to be the first night of the thirty year run\, of the disco that was to influence the music tastes\, to one extent or another\, of every person who walked through its doors. \nThe man behind the turntable\, 20 year old Cecil Nolan\, affectionately known to all as just “Cecil”\, had already garnered the reputation as the “music man of Clontarf” – if you were at a party in the neighbourhood\, he was\, more often than not\, the man in the corner spinning the discs… Originally running twice a week\, and three times during school holidays\, The Grove Social Club\, as it was formally branded\, quickly became a permanent fixture in the school diaries of that north Dublin generation. Over it’s 30 years\, The Grove was considered a safe haven for teens of north Dublin\, a melting pot where rockers could hang with Mods\, with Goths\, with geeks\, with hippies\, with Cureheads… No matter how you wore your hair\, you were accepted for who you were. Of course there was the music: Cecil’s playlist naturally grew and morphed over the years\, but there were more than a few staples that stood the test of time and became true “Grove Songs”. Among them  were Ram Jam’s ‘Black Betty’\, Boston’s ‘More Than A Feeling’\, Rainbow’s ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’\, ‘Purple Haze’ by Hendrix\, Santana’s version of The Zombies’ hit ‘She’s Not There’\, B52’s ‘Rock Lobster’\, Talking Heads ‘Psycho Killer’\, too many Zeppelin\, Doors and AC/DC songs to mention and in later years\, tracks like The Waterboys ‘The Whole Of The Moon’ would join the ranks of Grove Classics . And of course\, it wouldn’t be a school disco without the slow sets – where “Stairway” and ‘Freebird’ regularly rubbed shoulders with the likes of Janis Ian’s ‘At Seventeen’\, Hazel O’Connor’s ‘Will You?’\, Judy Tzuke’s ‘Stay With Me ’til Dawn’ and Dylan’s ‘Lay Lady Lay’. \nSadly\, in 1975\, the old Belgrove Football Club caught fire\, and was burnt to the ground. Not letting this stop the momentum\, Cecil and the rest of the Grove crew quickly relocated The Grove to a venue just a stones throw away\, the gymnasium of St. Paul’s College on Sybil Hill Road\, Raheny\, where it played out it’s next 22 years. Finally\, in 1997\, for various reasons\, they decided to call it a day and The Grove said it’s last goodbye. \nThis month\, in the year of it’s 50th anniversary\, The Grove will be returning home\, back to St. Paul’s College\, for one very special weekend. This will be a once in a lifetime chance for ex-Grovers to relive those memories – same Grove DJ\, same Grove music\, and for many the same Grove venue. The first night\, August 26th\, sold-out the day after tickets were released\, but a second night\, Friday August 25th has been added. Tickets have just been released through www.tickets.ie and were still available at the time of writing. In accordance with the school’s wishes\, there will be no alcohol available on the premises over the weekend\, just like the original Grove\, but there will be some organised pre-parties at various locations throughout the city – see www.TheGroveSocialClub.com and The Grove Social Club Facebook page for details. Just don’t forget your Polo mints and your address\, so you can get past the bouncers! \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSR6ZzjDZ94

SUMMARY:Green Sleeves
DESCRIPTION:Green Sleeves charts The Irish Printed Record Cover from 1955 to the present day. Our renewed love of vinyl continues to surge and this marks a long overdue look at the Irish-printed album cover. Yes\, you’ll spot U2’s Boy in there but there’s a wealth of reminders of the eclectic sounds\, genres and designs which emanate from this isle. There should also be a few guffaws at some cheesy band poses. (until October 1st)

SUMMARY:Ballet Átha Cliath
DESCRIPTION:Dublin Art Rock braintrust\, Cloud Castle Lake\, like to keep things somewhat low-key. Following the swell of praise that followed their meticulously assembled Dandelion EP\, the trio took a step back from the limelight\, focussing wholly on completing their LONG anticipated debut full length. So\, it’s with no small degree of excitement that we welcome their return to the fold with their first Dublin live show since 2016\, and it’s a special one at that… \n\nBallet Átha Cliath is a new short dance performance film by Howard Jones\, shot over the course of a day last August in Dublin featuring ballet choreographed by Irish ballerina Zoë Ashe-Browne and features an original score composed by none other than Cloud Castle Lake. Tomorrow night\, the band will be performing their soundtrack live\, as part of a Ballet Átha Cliath in the Sugar Club. Following the film showing\, the band promise to debut a selection of new work set to appear on their upcoming record. If all that wasn’t enticing enough; support on the night come courtesy of one the country’s most exciting new artists – Davy Keohe. Davy’s debut Short Passing Game has comfortably asserted its position as one of the year’s most essential domestic releases – we can’t wait to see what Davy has in store for this special full-band performance.

SUMMARY:The Great Gatsby
DESCRIPTION:This is an all-immersive razzle-dazzle start to Selina Cartmell’s tenure at the Gate\, a theatre in which philandering and bacchanalia has always been a subject matter for many of its productions. F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel which Jay Gatsby “sprang from his Platonic conception of himself\,” only garnered acclaim after his death. Flouting the mores of society back in 1925\, The Great Gatsby was a truly modern publication. The staging of it in the Gate marks a modernisation in its own right. (until Sept 16)

SUMMARY:Riverdance
DESCRIPTION:1993 seems like a far and distant land. But this\, among other things\, was when Riverdance was born. I was there at the rehearsals the night before it aired to the world from Millstreet\, a small town in North West Cork. Needless to say there were spine shivers at the energy and finesse at what we were witnessing. Mind-blowing is a fair summation. And this sense of awe is what has sustained its juggernaut existence across the globe ever since. 11\,500 performances and been seen live by over 25 million people in over 467 venues worldwide in 47 countries across 6 continents has resulted in a fortune for its devisers  John McColgan and Moya Doherty and connected a global audience with a dash of Irish culture. Bringing it all back home for a summer run is a bona fide crowd-pleaser too. \nRuns until September 3rd \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Statue for Bill Clinton
DESCRIPTION:Dublin-based theatre production company\, Verdant Productions presents “A Statue for Bill Clinton”\, a true Irish comedy\, about the visit of President Bill Clinton to Ireland in 1998. \nWritten by Tom McEnery\, author\, businessman and former Mayor of San Jose\, California\, and directed by Paul Meade\, the play is set in Ballybunion\, Co. Kerry.  Based on the true story of a local group intent on inviting the then President of the United States of America\, Bill Clinton to the town of Ballybunion. Irish comedy by Tom McEnery\, about the visit of Bill Clinton to Ireland \nA core group of residents hatch a cunning plan to unveil the world’s first statue to the leader of the free world during his visit to “The Kingdom” of Kerry.  However\, well publicised events in the Oval Office with a certain intern\, have put his visit in jeopardy.  As if this was not enough\, something unexpected has happened to the statue.  How will this affect events in Ballybunion as it awaits immortality on the world stage?  As Bill Clinton himself said: “You just have to keep swinging and know it will all even out!” \nIn advance of his arrival in Dublin\, Tom McEnery said\, “I am thrilled that ‘A Statue for Bill Clinton” debuts in Dublin\, Ireland this week.  This particularly tells a tale about how a town on the edge of the Atlantic fights for its self-respect and very survival. As in all such stories\, there is real humour to many of the characters and incidents.  Into this mix\, President Bill Clinton arrives with the drama swirling around the peace process and his possible impeachment.  Almost each and every incident is just as it actually happened on that day.” \nRuns until Sunday August 13th \n

SUMMARY:Crestfall
DESCRIPTION:By Mark O’Rowe\, the writer of the darkly comic 1999 hit play Howie the Rookie\, Crestfall (2003) charts similar underbelly lives in small towns. Marked by the Irish writer’s trademark style of muscular and direct dialogue\, Crestfall follows the intertwined fortunes of three damaged women.
