SUMMARY:Dietrich x Garbo: Icons of the Silver Screen at the IFI
DESCRIPTION:This June\, the Irish Film Institute presents Dietrich x Garbo\, a season celebrating two of cinema’s most iconic and enduring stars. Running until June 29th\, audiences can rediscover the brilliance of Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo through twelve landmark films that defined their careers and reshaped Hollywood’s golden age. \n \nThough often compared and occasionally cast as rivals\, Dietrich and Garbo embodied contrasting personas—one provocative and political\, the other elusive and enigmatic. Highlights include The Blue Angel\, Camille\, Morocco\, Queen Christina\, and Judgement at Nuremberg. \nEach screening offers a rare opportunity to experience their magnetic screen presence as it was meant to be seen—on the big screen. \nBooking now at ifi.ie or via the IFI Box Office.

SUMMARY:Shorelines 2 - Dublin Painting and Sketching Club
DESCRIPTION:Shorelines 2\, is a vibrant exhibition\, exploring Dublin’s varied seascapes through brand-new works from some of Ireland’s most exciting artists. \nThe exhibition of traditional painting and drawing embraces a remarkably wide range of styles\, ranging from semi-abstracts\, like Mary Duffy’s Windy Day on Sandymount to the photo-realism of Vincent Smith’s Dun Laoghaire. The glowing Impressionism of Anne McNulty’s Red Cranes in the Distance contrasts with the dramatic Devil’s Cove by Brian Manning. \nBlue\, green and grey form the dominant colour harmonies\, but Patrick Cahill\, Kayla Martell and Brian Gallagher respond to their subjects with wonderfully warm tones. Their paintings\, drawings and etchings reflect the life of our endlessly changing coastline.Using more limited pallets\, Susan Early’s etchings and Sorcha O’Farrell’s drawings are marvellously detailed and evocative. \nThis is the 151st year of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club’s exhibiting history. It was formed as a co-operative of artists\, in 1874\, with Nathaniel Hone\, John Butler Yeats\, Sarah Purser and Bram Stoker among its earlier members. Today\, club membership exceeds 90 and includes some of the country’s most illustrious painters\, sketch artists and print makers. \nVisitors to the exhibition will find a wealth of skill\, imagination and vision… a fitting testament to maritime Dublin and the long artistic tradition of the Club. \nCourtesy of the Dublin Port Company (DPC)\, the exhibition is housed in the Substation Gallery\, which is located at the entrance to Dublin Port\, on the corner of Alexandra Road. The exhibition is open to the public\, 11am-4.00pm\, from May 23rd to June 5th\, every day except Monday. Admission is free of charge.

SUMMARY:Stay Human Collective Fundraising Concert
DESCRIPTION:A fundraising concert by the Stay Human Collective will take place on Wednesday April 30th in Whelan’s Dublin\, featuring a host of renowned Irish artists. All proceeds will go to the Stay Human School in Jabalia\, Northern Gaza\, which currently provides education for 50 children as well as essential food\, fresh water\, baby supplies\, and financial support to the local community. \nFunds raised will support the school’s day-to-day operations and provide essential humanitarian support to the community during this ongoing crisis. Beyond academic learning\, the school serves as a place where children can rebuild friendships and find psychological support in a safe environment amid the devastation. \nThe fundraising event will feature performances from veteran Dublin band Sack\, chart-topping singer-songwriter Mundy\, Wexford-based group Novatone\, solo artist Alice Jago\, and Brian Brannigan of critically acclaimed A Lazarus Soul. \nComedian Kevin Gildea will be keeping things on track throughout the course of the evening as MC\, while Dublin artist Stefan Murphy will perform a specially written song ‘Prayer for the Palestinian people’. \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nA post shared by STEFAN MURPHY – HOSPITAL VERSES (@stefanmurphymusic) \n\n\n \nSpokesperson Moira Cassidy\, who is organizing the Dublin concert\, said: “We’re so grateful to all the artists who will perform on April 30th in Whelan’s to help raise funds for the Stay Human Collective in Jabalia. We really want to support the community in their mission to keep Palestinian children’s dreams alive through education. Education offers a form of hope in the midst of the trauma and suffering these children have and are enduring. The school is basically just four walls in a bombed-out area in Gaza\, but since opening in September it has provided not just education\, but distraction from the horrors they are enduring. In the school\, these young children\, many of whom are orphaned and have medical or psychological issues\, can have some semblance of normality. The Stay Human school has become an essential space in their lives which we want to help continue and expand for the other children in the community who are eager to attend.” \n \nThe Stay Human Collective began as a grassroots mutual aid initiative in mid-2024 with members from Ireland\, Italy\, the UK\, Egypt\, and Palestine who started crowdfunding as an emergency response to provide humanitarian aid to families in Jabalia. The project evolved when local team members in Gaza transformed part of a damaged building into a classroom\, recruited three teachers\, and gathered educational supplies. Since September 2024\, the school has offered Arabic\, English\, and Mathematics to children in the community. \nAbed\, who works on the Stay Human initiative in Jabalia with his wife and teacher\, Aya\, explains what the school means to the students: “The Stay Human school gives the children hope in darkness. It gives them a chance to learn\, play and socialise with their peers. It’s a chance for some feeling of normal life. We are grateful to all our donors and especially to the Irish people who have stood in solidarity with us.” \n The Stay Human Collective Fundraiser Concert takes place at Whelan’s on Wednesday 30th April 2025. Tickets are €25.50 and are on sale now at whelanslive.com. Doors open at 7.30pm. SUMMARY:Youth's The Season - ?
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Gregory Project at the Abbey Theatre\, a body of work celebrating the legacy of Abbey Theatre co-founder Augusta Gregory\, Youth’s The Season – ? is director Sarah Jane Scaife’s version of Mary Manning’s 1930’s coming of age satire. \nCommenting on the play\, Sarah Jane Scaife said: “When I read Youth’s The Season -? I was really surprised at how different the world it presented felt… It was from a young\, female\, urban perspective. It was funny but in a caustic way\, which felt very recognisable to me. \nThe sense of angst\, boredom and frustration for what society had on offer to young women or young men who didn’t conform to the stereotype of Irish society\, was familiar in a very real way for me. What is so interesting today is recognising that all the same frustrations\, the fears of war\, the anxiety of being different or not fitting in that are experienced by the youth today\, are written into this play which was written by a young woman in her early twenties\, in 1930.” \nScaife’s work on Beckett’s canon has always been enthralling and with a cracking young cast\, including the rising star of Irish drama Ciara Berkeley\, this looks like a winner all round. \nApril 2nd – May 3rd \nabbeytheatre.ie
