SUMMARY:Circle Sessions Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Circle Sessions are a performance collective of poets\, musicians\, comedians and other performance artists. They meet every Monday night in the International Bar (Wicklow Street) between 8pm and 11.15pm and perform anything and everything. \nThey are similar to an open mic in that they encourage members of the audience to perform\, however\, the main difference is that they do not normally use a mic. The performers are there to perform and the audience are there to listen. There is a mutual respect between the two such that amplification is rarely required\, which creates its own unique atmosphere. \nJoin them for an evening of poetry\, music\, and spoken word this Tuesday at the Sugar Club.

SUMMARY:End Of.
DESCRIPTION:A site-specific comedy at the Gutter Bookshop Temple Bar\, End Of. is a trippy take on the apocalypse featuring illusions by award winning magician Davey McAuley and direction by acclaimed director Conor Hanratty. \nBest friends Siobhán and Drew know what to expect from a day’s work in the bookshop: difficult customers\, poor pay and bad prospects. But when a box arrives containing a bewildering object—causing books to levitate and shelves to disappear—they are plunged into a mystery that makes them\nquestion not just their friendship\, but the very fate of the World. A treat for anyone who loves to wonder “how did they do that?” End Of. is a thought provoking comedy about the very beginning of the very end of the world. \nThe first draft of End Of. was completed on the 9th of November\, 2016\, the day Donald Trump became President Elect of the United States. Some thought Trump’s election signalled the apocalypse\, some celebrated it in\nthe streets and some simply wondered “how did this happen?” End Of. is a play that offers a theory on “how”: a study of how disagreement becomes disdain\, End Of. is the story of how the end of a relationship\, a society and the world might be one and the same. \n

SUMMARY:Culture Night: Poetry Speed Dating
DESCRIPTION:Are you a poet? Do you want to read your poetry aloud and meet like minded people but find everything about both those concepts overwhelming? Poetry Speed Dating is for all kinds of poets\, whether they’re just starting out or an old hand looking for a casual listener for some new material. The night is designed to combat both the setup of a traditional poetry night as well as the horrible life draining social obligation known as networking. \n \nHow it works: Two chairs\, two poets\, two poems. Ten minutes. You sit opposite someone – maybe a stranger\, maybe an old friend\, maybe your dad who came along out of curiosity – and you read them or show them your poem. Then they show you or read you their poem\, and maybe you guys talk about it. You have 10-15 minutes (we’ll see how it goes) together and then a bell/whistle will sound and one of you will move on to the next table\, to do the same again – different person\, maybe a different poem. \nIf that sounds exhausting you can also just bring poems you like and share them with another person. The idea is to read a poem and escape – you gain a moment of vulnerability with another human and you get to practise reading aloud or having your work read\, then you can move on. \nIt’s a free night and there’s absolutely zero romantic implication\, unless someone falls in love with your beautiful words

SUMMARY:Ciara Sidine's "Unbroken Line"
DESCRIPTION:Head to the Sugar Club on Thursday September 21st for the much-anticipated new album ‘Unbroken Line’ from critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Ciara Sidine. \nDescribed by UNCUT as‘ Americana [with] an unmistakeably Celtic feel to its poetic lyrics and confident vocals’\, the Dublin-based artist’s music is influenced by roots and alternative country. Her first album ‘Shadow Road Shining’ led to her being described in Hot Press as ‘one of the finest singer-songwriters of her generation’ with (Irish Times) ‘vocals and lyrics so distilled they reveal fresh angles with each repeated exposure’. \nCheck out the live video of the deeply atmospheric new track Trouble (Come Find Me) below\, played with the band that will accompany her Sugar Club gig\, featuring legendary guitarist Conor Brady and drummer Dave Hingerty (Frames\, Josh Ritter). \n \nHailed as ‘a finely rounded\, richly produced album of Americana’ by the Irish Times\, this event is not to be missed. SUMMARY:DFF: Back Jam
DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Fringe is in full swing and the city is bustling with unique events and performances of all stripes. With so much going on – it can be hard to single out any one particular show. That said\, it always pays to take note of anything bearing the Fried Plantains Collective name. \n  \nBlack Jam is Fried Plantain’s  night celebrating the experiences of and art produced by disparate members of the Afro diaspora. Big Joanie is jetting over from London and bringing some black feminist sistah punk with her. Then it’s time for some grunge meets soul by way of punk and psychedelia as Sabatta take to the stage. Completing the line-up\, we’ve got Dublin’s best Afro-trad band Rhythm Africana and a performance from Côte d’Ivoire’s premier freestyle rapper\, MAI. \n  \nEclecticism in the extreme and all in service of providing a platform for voices all too often overlooked – this isn’t a show to be missed.

SUMMARY:Fringe Review: Normal
DESCRIPTION:A young woman\, Helen\, sits and roughly massages her forehead\, surrounded by toppled tables and vivid\, mute balloons. She has thrown a birthday party for her boyfriend\, Gary (who never appears) and it has gone horribly awry. Enter Phil\, Gary’s mother\, and her scowl is enough to inform us that she is not Helen’s biggest fan. They move around the room\, circling each other like predators\, both equally convinced that the other is the threat to Gary’s wellbeing. Another important fact: Gary has autism. \n Produced by the We Get High On This collective\, Normal is a play not about autism\, but about the way we as a society treat those who are somewhere on the autism spectrum. Through the tense dialogue between the two women\, their behaviour is dissected and scrutinised: motherly instincts become smothering; intimacy becomes a point of anxiety. Hearing them speak about Gary is difficult\, sometimes infuriating\, but our own complicity is never left unchecked: viewers are encouraged to sit at tables onstage. \n While Gary is a hot topic with the characters\, so much more is explored in this short play. It draws us in with its unassuming set and reticent characters\, slowly revealing its depth and reach.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Poetry: 10 years of Poetry Aloud
DESCRIPTION:Poets from W. B. Yeats to Seamus Heaney have used the National Library’s reading rooms\, and the literary papers of many poets are part of the library’s manuscripts collections. Our printed collection includes the work of well-known and lesser known poets. The creativity and legacy of W. B. Yeats is celebrated in the popular exhibition Yeats: the life and work of William Butler Yeats.  \nPoetry Aloud is an All-Ireland poetry speaking competition for post-primary schools organised by the NLI and Poetry Ireland. The idea originated in Wesley College\, Dublin with English teacher Niall MacMonagle. The first national poetry speaking competition was held in 2006 and coincided with the opening of the Yeats exhibition. The National Library and Poetry Ireland jointly organised Yeats Aloud in 2006. \nIn 2007\, the competition became Poetry Aloud and has been running since as an all-Ireland poetry speaking competition for post primary schools on the island of Ireland.  The NLI and Poetry Ireland have worked in collaboration on Poetry Aloud for the past 10 years. \nTo celebrate 10 years of Poetry Aloud as a national competition\, join Professor Margaret Kelleher\, Chair of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama\, UCD for a short talk followed by a conversation with some former winners who will read their own favourite poems.  Niall MacMonagle will introduce the evening. \nAll welcome! Booking not required.

SUMMARY:Fringe Review: Polar Night
DESCRIPTION:Polar Night begins not with a shiver\, but with an eerie dream sequence projected onto the back of the stage\, accompanied by noisy\, ice-shard music. Photographer Aaron Stapleton provides these surreal and solemn visuals; whether they are dreams or visions is hard to say\, but their ominousness is unmistakeable. The shapes that fly up are liquid\, uncertain copycats of humans\, perhaps a visual cue for the play’s premise: being human means being ugly\, flawed\, and mercurial. \n The story is of a daughter seeking out her estranged mother who has left her family for a man called Ove\, who has taken her to live with him in the Arctic. The mother’s sickness is quickly revealed\, adding tension to attempts at familial cohesiveness. What is forced\, and what is natural? How can these roles be reassumed after so much time has passed\, and to what end? \n Coldness\, darkness\, sleeplessness and shuffling feet make up a lot of conversation\, although there are some moments of back-and-forth that snowball into something stinging\, with writer Nadine Flynn calling it a draw just in time before it tips into melodrama. The play is most powerful during these moments of domestic and psychological tension\, even the most benign of instances: making tea\, for example\, bubbles up into a power struggle\, or the unsettling power of raised voices in small\, quiet spaces. \n\nWords: John Vaughan.

SUMMARY:Amber Arcades
DESCRIPTION:Hailed by the Guardian as “a real talent\,” Amber Arcades comes to Dublin this Sunday September 27th to bless the air with her mesmerizing melodies. The swirling\, steely songs on Amber Arcades’ dazzling debut are the work of Annelotte De Graaf\, a woman inspired by “time\, continuity\, coincidence and magic”\, as well as early-morning jetlag (on ‘Turning Light\,’ shown below) and an artist’s plans for a utopian city (‘Constant’s Dream’). \nThat may all sound pretty dreamy\, and these songs do have wonderful ethereal qualities\, but De Graaf’s dreams are not the whimsical kind. De Graaf’s dreams have led to her working as a legal aide on UN war crime tribunals\, to inviting skint strangers to share her Utrecht squat\, and to spending her life savings on a flight to New York because that’s where she wanted to record her first album. \n“I made a list of five producers – I went on Discogs and looked at records I liked and who had produced them\, and I made the list and I emailed them with the demos I’d made at home in Garageband\,” she says. And that’s how she found producer Ben Greenberg. “It was kind of scary\, because he was definitely the odd one out\, looking at the stuff he’d done. The others were more mainstream\, and Ben was the weird one who’d produced all this hardcore punk shit. That’s also what I thought would make it interesting.” \nGreenberg has worked with Destruction Unit and The Men – bands who play punk\, skronky jazz\, experimental guitar noise and raucous pop – but he’d never worked with a Dutch artist whose only previous release was an EP of melancholic folk ballads.

SUMMARY:Dolittle Presents: Amina & Guests
DESCRIPTION:Lauded by the Irish Times “quietly spooktacular\,” this show is a live performance to the 1913 French silent film Juve Contre Fantômas \nHailing from Reykjavík Iceland\, Amiina are a five piece band comprising of Hildur Ársælsdóttir\, María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir\, Sólrún Sumarliðadóttir\, Magnús Trygvason Eliassen and Guðmundur Vignir Karlsson (aka Kippi Kaninus). \n\nAmiina’s origins go back to the late 1990s\, when four girls studying string instruments at the Reykjavík College of Music formed a string quartet. The group started out playing classical music\, but increasingly moved on to play all sorts of music with various bands in Reykjavík. In 1999 the quartet joined Icelandic band Sigur Róson-stage. The collaboration continued for over a decade\, with Amiina contributing strings to Sigur Rós’ music on tour and in the recording studio on the albums ( ) \, Takk\, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust and Valtari. \nMelancholic and ethereal\, yet full of suspense\, pounding rhythms and haunting melodies\, Amiina’s fans won’t be disappointed. SUMMARY:clap your hands say yeah
DESCRIPTION:Coming to Whelan’s this Friday\, September 15th\, is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Like previous Clap Your Hands Say Yeah records\, The Tourist nods to Ounsworth’s musical heroes—a group that includes artists such as John Cale\, Robert Wyatt\, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. However\, this album also shows a natural progression from previous records. “Better Off” and “The Vanity Of Trying” are lush\, keyboard-augmented songs\, while “A Chance To Cure” and “Ambulance Chaser” are rhythmically askew\, and the sighing “Loose Ends” is delicate\, acoustic-based folk-rock. \nThe Tourist emerged from a period where Ounsworth was doing a lot of intense soul-searching\, and processing personal events that irrevocably shaped his life and future. But although most of these songs came together during this time of reflection\, he considers the record to be cathartic—an exhale of sorts\, rather than a collection of songs where he was indulging in self-pity or letting things stagnate or fester. \n \n“I am a relatively solitary person and seem to work best alone\,” he says. “I do count on others to help the project as the process of making and releasing an album moves forward\, but if it doesn’t match what I have in mind\, it’s hard for me to really be there for it. I guess this is one reason why the project has been independent all this time. Trust me\, I understand that thinking this way is both an asset and a liability.”

SUMMARY:Everything Now
DESCRIPTION:Everything Now is a rollercoaster ride danced by an all-male\, ethnically diverse cast of renowned dancers – Kevin Coquelard (France/Ireland)\, Maurice Ivy (USA)\, Sebastiao Mpembele Kamalandua (Ireland/Angola) and Ryan O’Neill (Ireland). The dancers thrust us into a dynamic and vital physical exploration of how we respond to media and whether individuals can safeguard who they are when identity shifts\, is reshaped\, and shifts again in a time when nationhood is transformable\, languages meld\, and the news is incessant. \n  \nEverything Now combines the formality and rigour of highly disciplined dance with elements of a 1960s happening to explore the pervasive\, potentially damaging influences of Western society\, of being consumed and consuming\, while recognising that joy is still to be found. \n  \nThe piece is accompanied by powerful new music composed by Brian Hogan\, bass player and co-writer/arranger with Kila\, and leader of Preacher’s Son; and the support of a laughing/shouting/silent multicultural chorus.

SUMMARY:Ailbhe Barrett's INFUSIONS
DESCRIPTION:Graphic Studio Gallery presents INFUSIONS\, the debut solo exhibition of Ailbhe Barrett. James Hanley of RHA will officially open the show on the 7th of September at 6pm. He has said the following of Ailbhe Barrett’s work: \n“Nine large prints – a mix of etchings\, monoprints with etchings\, and etchings with carborundum – feature alongside two original oil paintings. Country landscape predominates\, with one exception of an evocative view outward from Limerick train station\, the tracks slowly dissolving in the creeping mist\, form disappearing into the ether in the manner of Monet’s similar manifestations of light and steam enveloping stone and iron. \n \nBut it is in those rural landscapes that Ailbhe’s star shines. It is here that her innate artistic sensibility finds voice. This is the world of her childhood and she knows it from its winter light to its summer sun\, and from its hills to its meadows. \nHer images are not\, however\, the landscapes of a locale or a particular place\, but rather the suggestion of a mood\, the evocation of a place that captures her imagination. It is not surprising that Turner was an early inspiration in the way he transformed the world into something far more atmospheric than it is by his bravura manipulation of paint. So too with Ailbhe. Two trees side by side\, hedgerows and fields\, a bend in the river\, distant mountains shimmer in a haze of memory made manifest by her mastery\, with aquatints\, sugarlift and spitbite amplifying her dexterous line.” \n

SUMMARY:Gladys and the Gutter Stars
DESCRIPTION:Gladys and The Gutter Stars aims to explore\, mock and ultimately celebrate what it means to create and what it means to fail. Part gig\, part interview\, the production features newly written songs and lyrics by Cameron Macaulay and Rachel Gleeson. You can watch a clip of the performance here\, to get a taste of what’s in store. \nAn intimate interview and performance from one of the most overlooked fictional bands of 2017: Gladys and The Gutter Stars. They’ll discuss the making of their self-titled debut album\, and all the triumphs (and tribulations) involved in the process. In a strange turn of events\, Gladys\, the group’s enigmatic front-woman\, has not been heard from in the six months following the album’s release. Rumours abound. Some say she is now a snorkeling instructor in Palau. Others say that she is simply down in Cork. \nPerhaps the two remaining Gutter Stars might shed some light on the mystery. Or perhaps deepen it. SUMMARY:Shelby Earl
DESCRIPTION:Shelby Earl weaves epic stories of love\, loss and darkness with her emotive voice. Treading the line between indie and folk\, Shelby is an essential part of a new wave of female musicians like Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten who are writing poetic song lyrics and offsetting them with sparse production in order to expose the heavyweight emotions at play. \nShelby draws characters in her musical stories; her latest album tells tales of babies not yet born and of women who will cry an ocean of tears\, if only to test their ability to swim. Couched in symbolism\, each track is like a short story that you listen to over and over\, annotating it in your mind. \nExperience Shelby’s power and storytelling skill at Whelan’s this Sunday\, September 10th.

SUMMARY:Pear Label Launch
DESCRIPTION:Dublin collective Pear kick off their first release with the debut EP from local bearded maestro r.kitt consisting of 4 kaleidoscopic house joints. \nYou can listen to both tunes of the A-side here.\nDrawing deeply on influences from Chicago and from the distinct melodic emotion achieved by artists like Larry Heard\, each track on this 12 is awash with feeling riding some strong rhythms to provoke bodily movement. The melodies are deep and rich\, the beats are banging\, and you are invited to bop and groove. \nIn the artist’s own words: “I want your mind and body to be lost in this experience. The Jigsaw EP is a map to get you there.” \n
