SUMMARY:Adrian Crowley
DESCRIPTION:Midst the fanfare of hometown musicians and their trumpeting of Christmas shows sits the unassuming Crowley. He may fly under the radar of the masses but Crowley brings a tender beauty to his compositions and considerations on existence. Dark Eyed Messenger\, his most recent release\, is produced by Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens\, The Gloaming) and sees Crowley put down his guitar and “decide to live out his days as a silver birch tree”. A sturdy musical presence who may be overshadowed at times but one who we should truly rejoice!

SUMMARY:Storm(zy) Brewing
DESCRIPTION:If there happened to be a mural of the year awards ceremony\, then the one of Stormzy by the Subset collective in Smithfield would be on the podium. It truly has a transformative effect on the still grey-tinged surrounds but it may be gone by December 15th. Dublin City Council want it gone as it was erected without planning permission. Subset can’t afford to fight it. The mural is on the Linders building. Jonathan Melvin\, the property manager for the building has no beef with it. “It’s a massive shame for the mural to come down\, it brightened up an otherwise dull street.” C’mon DCC\, let some common sense prevail.

SUMMARY:Gaelynn Lea
DESCRIPTION:Gaelynn Lea was given the opportunity of a lifetime when she won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest. More than 6\,000 artists submitted videos in which they performed an original song behind a desk of their choosing with the hope of winning a chance to play a Tiny Desk concert at NPR. Gaelynn Lea was the overwhelming favorite of the six judges. and Gaelynn Lea certainly made the most of it. She and her husband Paul quit their jobs\, sold their house\, bought a van\, and hit the road. \nSince they left just over a year ago\, Gaelynn has played over 200 shows in 39 states and 6 countries. She has performed in the widest variety of venues imaginable – coffee shops\, bars\, music festivals\, elementary schools\, nursing homes\,colleges\, The House of Blues\, Music City Roots\, The Kennedy Center\, The State Department and even BBC World News. \nThis tale of adventure wouldn’t be particularly remarkable if the music failed to deliver. But Gaelynn Lea has developed a “stop you in your tracks sound.” (Bob Boilen\, All Songs Considered) Playing traditional fiddle music and original songs using her violin and a looping pedal\, Gaelynn Lea’s “music is imbued with a melancholic poetry so potent it must be heard to believed.” (Isaac Feldberg\, Boston Globe) \nGaelynn Lea performs from her electric wheelchair. She began playing violin 20 years ago after a creative music teacher helped her to adapt a playing style that suits her frame. Lea holds her instrument like a tiny cello and loops her classically trained rhythms and melodies “to create a symphonic cacophony that is both glorious in its reach and profoundly introspective”. (Collins de la Cour\, Ear to the Ground) Her original songs explore the contrasting nature of existence – dark and light\, birth and death\, anger and forgiveness\, sorrow and joy. Gaelynn Lea’s live performances can be overwhelmingly soul-stirring – Bob Boilen reported that “there was hardly a dry eye” at her 2016 Tiny Desk Concert. However\, she is not all seriousness during her shows. In fact\, Gaelynn is disarmingly charming onstage\, “at once self-deprecating and plain spokenly funny”. (Chris Riemenschneider\, Star Tribune) She regales the audience with humorous anecdotes in between songs\, putting those in attendance at ease. \nAlthough the past year has been spent mostly on the road\, Gaelynn Lea has somehow found the time to work on her fourth studio album; If Only Love Would Be Our Guide is expected to be released in September 2018. It is an eclectic collection that runs the gamut sonically – from pensive to luscious to aggressive to decidedly pop – and if that’s not enough variety\, there’s even a Finnish fiddle tune! The connecting thread of this album is Gaelynn Lea herself – a singular voice and violin guide the listener on a journey which touches on some of life’s greatest mysteries. \n  \nThe structure of these tracks made this album impossible to create alone\, so Gaelynn Lea enlisted the help of some musical friends to bring her new album to life. This arrangement is quite a departure for Lea\, who up until this point has crafted most of her music using only a few tools: a violin\, a voice\, and a looping pedal. Her band is comprised of several Minnesota heavy-hitters including Al Church\, Dave Mehling\, Marty Dosh\, Andrew Foreman\, and Alan Sparhawk. Their creative influence and musicality is evident on every track\, though the band’s contributions never cover up or diminish the poignancy or presence of Gaelynn’s music. Rather the new album allows for a fuller\, more complete expression of her heart and soul. \n  \nIn addition to performing and recording\, Gaelynn also loves to do speaking engagements about disability awareness\, the power of music\, and leading an enriching life. She has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta\, or Brittle Bones Disease. \n  \nGaelynn is a strong voice in the disability community; she uses her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change. Gaelynn Lea believes society must prioritize accessibility so people with disabilities can participate in their communities and use their gifts without barriers or discrimination.

SUMMARY:Jacob Banks at the Sugar Club
DESCRIPTION:While his fans await the release of his new LP Village with heightened relish\, Banks is laying the foundations blocks for the well justified hype with a series of EPs and this sell-out tour. The gravely vocals belie Banks’s 26 years on this planet. Tracks such as Silver Lining and Chainsmoking are classics in the making. You will be hearing alot more about Banks in 2018. This is your chance to chalk down the ‘I was there’ line for your own future repertoire.

SUMMARY:MART Gallery Green Christmas Market
DESCRIPTION:Now in its fifth year\, The MART Gallery has teamed up with Eastern Midlands Regional Waste Management Office [EMRWMO] to host Ireland’s largest green creative Christmas Market hosting vendors selling Art\, Design\, Craft\, Knits/Fashion\, and Jewellery from reused / recycled materials along with businesses promoting the sharing economy. \nFollowing on from the very successful Reuse Month festival which took place in MART Gallery in October 2017 MART and EMRWMO have planned a Green Christmas market based on the format of the Reuse festival. \n“With so much waste related to Christmas gift shopping each year\, we felt it was important to provide an environmentally friendly alternative\,” says MART Gallery co-director Matthew Nevin. “And as always\, we’ve tried to provide a space for small\, independent makers and craftspeople to share their work with the public.” \n“The regional waste management plan has an objective which seeks to promote the reuse sector and I feel that the Christmas market in MART is an excellent platform to support and promote the amazing work being carried out in this under utilised sector” says Declan Breen\, Waste Prevention Officer\, EMRWMO. \nThe market will provide a much-needed place to sell\, promote\, showcase and buy eco-friendly gifts and services. This will included gift items made from reused / recycled materials alongside businesses promoting reuse and the sharing economy. \nHoused in a beautifully repurposed fire station on the high street\, Rathmines\, the market will showcase a wide range of hand-made\, locally produced items – perfect for Christmas gifts\, or as a present to treat yourself! \nMART’s Green Christmas Market serves to offer an environmentally friendly alternative which allows people to purchase sustainable and locally produced gifts for family and friends\, all under one roof during the three long weekends of December. \n

SUMMARY:GalleryX Presents Imaginary Mythologies
DESCRIPTION:We have all heard about artists being inspired by myths and legends. These artists however have created their own. \nThe mysterious author of Gubu Dolls has built a history\, an epic\, a mythic narrative underlying his large-scale installation using individually created dolls\, reminiscent of the epic narrative bas-reliefs of the Assyrian or Roman tradition. \nDeirdre Nuttall is an ethnologist who crafts benevolent\, sometimes tragic deities punctuating the daily life and death of a lost civilisation. \nCome to GalleryX on the 7th of December and admire the beautiful artefacts and the inspiring stories that underlie them! And why not\, procure a couple of Christmas presents that won’t be easily forgotten…

SUMMARY:Crash Ensemble | 20 Years
DESCRIPTION:Crash Ensemble are Ireland’s ‘foremost contemporary music ensemble’ and they celebrate 20 years in existence this year.  \nReflecting on your 20 years of contemporary classical music\, how do you think Crash Ensemble has maintained the dynamic and cutting-edge sound it’s so revered for? \nContemporary music is about the future\, pushing boundaries\, the new and the next. It’s really important to the ensemble to keep moving and evolving. We don’t just play existing repertoire or even commission new work\, we look at who we work with\, how we present work and engage with audiences. \nOver the past summer\, CrashLands\, your new music project\, has crash landed in various spots around the country. How important is space in your musical creations? How much does it inform the kind of sounds you create? \nCrashLands was very much about the context. The first CrashLands was on Long Island\, West Cork. We performed on the edge of a cliff with the sun setting behind us. The audience came over on the ferry\, and when that sold out they took to their own boats and kayaks to make sure they didn’t miss out. We had to learn how to deal with being outdoors\, with weather\, how this changes how sound travels and communication. It was a challenge that we learned from\, after 20 years there is still room for learning and evolving! \nThe diverse assortment of composers that made up the 20 creators in the CrashLands project is eclectic to say the least. How did you go about curating the composers for the project? \nWe asked 20 composers to write us new pieces for our birthday. These are composers who have worked with us over the years or who we wanted to work with in the future. They’re composers who we felt say something about the past\, present and future of new music and Crash. Of the twenty composers ten are from Ireland and ten are from outside of Ireland. \nIn choosing these composers from around the world as well as from home\, did you draw inspiration from other cultures and if so whom? \nCrash is an internationally known group and we see ourselves in that context. \nAmerican music has always been deeply important to the ensemble\, right from the founding of the ensemble in 1997. Composer and Crash founder\, Donnacha Dennehy\, had just returned to Ireland after graduate studies at the University of Illinois. He wanted to set up a new type of music ensemble in Ireland\, one that was open to the influences from contemporary popular culture\, while also deeply committed to the values of serious music endeavour. \nAmerican minimal and post-minimal work featured strongly in early programs\, introducing Irish audiences to unapologetic pieces such as Philip Glass’s Music in Similar Motion. We have also forged links to Iceland of late. We played Airwaves last year and our latest album came out this year on the Icelandic Bedroom Community label\, and we have plans up our sleeves with composer/conductor Daniel Bjarnason. \nYou’ve collaborated with filmmaker Brendan Canty and poet Doireann Ni Ghríofa for your compositions for CrashLands. Do you think you will continue to challenge the barriers between different art forms?  \nAbsolutely\, we are not interested in keeping to our silo\, either musically or art form. What matters to us is the quality of the work and in the delivery. We will always produce serious hard-core contemporary music\, but we also look around us to see how we can be part of a wider conversation. \nIn celebration of their 20 birthday\, Crash Ensemble will perform all twenty works from CrashLands over two nights at the National Concert Hall\, Dublin\, with the films from Brendan Canty and readings from Doireann Ní Ghríofa\, on Friday November 24 and Saturday November 25. \nCrashLands\, the album will be out in 2018. \ncrashensemble.com

SUMMARY:Eva O'Donovan | Les Femmes Diaphanes
DESCRIPTION:“I chose the French title because my art is influenced by interior style. Mostly looking towards historical France focusing on Paris and Versailles.  In the early 1700’s Marie Antoinette’s more frivolous influence on fashion\, styling and the interior play an important role in my paintings. Although my paintings only allude to the interior space with the use of patterned fabric traditionally used in interior design the figure plays the main role. Often painted in costume to create a sense of cinematic drama and theatricality the subjects poses generally mimic those in traditional portraiture. Teaming with this the subject of the female gaze and the societal constraints that women have had and continue to overcome throughout the ages the finished portrait emerges with significant baggage even though it may appear to come from a whimsical place.” – Eva O’Donovan \n\n\n\nRuns until November 30th

SUMMARY:HOW TO SAY IT THE WAY IT IS!
DESCRIPTION:HOW TO SAY IT THE WAY IT IS! is an exhibition at Rua Red that inaugurates the gallery’s year-long partnership with a/political\, a London-based organisation whose taste\, a blend of political activism and visual art\, is as acquired as an exclamation mark on an all caps title. The exhibition has works by various international artists\, many of which have never been shown in Ireland before\, and aims to provide ‘an alternative narrative to the current political status quo – one of timeless defiance\, resistance and disorder.’ The exhibition wants not only to knock the socks off our feet\, but also to know who made them and what made us think we deserve them in the first place. \nUntil December 2nd

SUMMARY:Let the Right One In
DESCRIPTION:This marks a fascinating unconventional departure by the Abbey in their choice of ‘Christmas’ show. Let the Right One In is the Swedish romantic horror story between Oskar (Craig Connolly) and Eli (Katie Holan) which saw director Tomas Alfredson bring John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel to a wider audience. It’s a tale of teen misfits\, bullying and sinister happening with some slasher gore. The set is a spartan stunningly spartan woodland\, the score by Ólafur Arnalds is sublime and the mostly young cast work well. It’s certainly a welcome contrast to the panto fare elsewhere even if it does lurch a little into the land of outlandish on occasion.

SUMMARY:The Light Gleams an Instant
DESCRIPTION:26 years ago Danish photographer Krass Clement landed on Irish soil. Whilst on a residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre Annaghmakerrig in Monaghan\, Clement ended up in Drum in Monaghan. Over the course of a night\, he shot the photobook in a small pub in then village with a Leica and three rolls of film. A Scandinavian melancholy is evident in his work which is concerned with reflecting interior states of mind rather than with documenting real life situations. The accompaniment to this is a new body of work Dublin which was shot here. The thread of solitude is still palpable.

SUMMARY:Art Nude Ireland: Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, November 13 th \, Art Nude Ireland will launch its inaugural exhibition at 6 pm in Filmbase on Curved Street in Temple Bar.  Photographers and models will be showing 50\nworks. \nIreland has yet to embrace the beauty of nude photography\, which is something this exhibition aims to fix. In the first three decades of the 20 th century\, fine art nude photography became a distinct form of artistic expression in Europe and North America. Fine art nude work by photographers such as Man Ray\, Tina Modotti\, and Edward Weston showed that the camera was a powerful tool for artistic expression with the body as its primary motif. During the last 100 years this\ngenre has developed in breadth and originality. \nFine art nude photography features frequently in private and public art spaces across the Western world\, with the exception of Ireland. Art Nude Ireland is a collective of women and men\, art photographers and models\, who have met and worked together regularly over the last two years to develop this art form. \nMembers of the collective that are exhibiting work include Vonna Nolan\, Paul Brady\, and Eamonn Farrell and Douglas Ross who have exhibited and been published both nationally and internationally.
