SUMMARY:Jay Glass Dubs (Live) + Bokeh Edwards (DJ)
DESCRIPTION:Jay Glass Dubs is Dimitris Papadatos’s outlet for stripped-back\, broken-down dub mutations. A “counter-factual historical approach of dub music”\, his sound is at once brutal and lumbering and ethereally light. Since his first release under the Jay Glass Dubs alias by way of Parisian outfit Hylé Tapes he’s gone from strength to strength\, with several brilliant releases on Bokeh Versions\, Seagrave and Anòmia – including remixes for avant-garde rock band Guerilla Toss. His recent compilation of unreleased dubs on Ecstatic was a late contender for our favourite record of 2017. \nBokeh Versions kingpin Bokeh Edwards will be DJing on the night\, giving us a rare chance to hear the outernational sorcery that’s moulded Bokeh Versions into one of the most exciting experimental labels operating at the minute.

SUMMARY:TradFest
DESCRIPTION:Expanding the idea of trad to somewhat stretched limits at times\, TradFest has nonetheless thankfully mushroomed in scale over recent years. Martha Wainwright\, Judy Collins\, Andy Irvine & Donal Lunny\, This Is How We Fly\, Wallis Bird\, The New Folk with Ailbhe Reddy are among the mash of old and new. We’re going to google Socks in the Frying Pan once these words are written. This year TradFest also pays a musical tribute to the legendary Eamonn Campbell (The Dubliners) with all proceeds from the concert at St Michan’s Church will go to Coolmine\, a charity dedicated to overcoming addiction. There’s family concerts\, free gigs and a screening of Robert Manthoulis’s The Irish Or The Memory of A People which examined Irish traditional music in 1971.

DESCRIPTION:The world falls into two groups – those who have seen Pat Kinevane and those who haven’t. If you fall into the later then you have no excuse not to see Forgotten. SUMMARY:Dara O’Briain - Voice of Reason
DESCRIPTION:He did 17 dates in the autumn and now he returns for another seven which basically means Dara O’Briain will have approximately 24\,000 people see his Voice of Reason tour. As homegrown comics go\, only the likes of Tommy Tiernan would have once eclipsed him. O’Briain is affable with a jovial personal and jubbly presence. He’s also boasts an enviable range of hosting talent from Robot Wars to travel shows to penning Sunday Times articles about his love of Star Wars. His pool of experience and seemingly endless fascinations adds an informed edge to his observations. Oh and he’s sold out all these dates too it seems.

SUMMARY:Camelphat
DESCRIPTION:The January chills may be swirling outside but Camelphat are sure to bring the heat to District 8. In hindsight that is terrible cheesy line but hey these guys are called Camelphat so possibly deserving of it. The aforementioned ‘Phat rounded off 2017 with the #1 and #2 best-selling tracks on Beatport and nabbed a Grammy nomination in November for their infectious Cola hit with Elderbrook. Hence a blissed out beach image on their Twitter account from Fiji in December.

SUMMARY:Coffee Culture: Resilience
DESCRIPTION:coffee|culture#3 : Resilience \nThis January\, coffee|culture is inviting three creatives who have used their artistic output as a form of expression enabling them to thrive. Although the creative industry can be a challenging and daunting place\, creatives are resilient and bounce back from obstacles; be it diminishing arts grants\, red tape regulations or burnout syndrome. \nGiven the nature of this event\, we wanted to give back by supporting a social enterprise that specialises in intervention-preventative\, wellness workshops for the youth of Ireland. All profits from this event will be donated to Soar\, a collective movement that empowers young people to believe in themselves and fulfil their true potential. \nSpeakers: \nShane O Malley\nShane O’Malley is among a group of contemporary artists who have emerged from Ireland’s graffiti subculture to work in mediums of paint\, murals and art installations. Shane uses vibrant art pieces as a form of self expression to visualise his mind\, inner conflicts and mental health. \nAoife McElwain\nAoife McElwain is a food writer and creative events planner. Aoife has excelled in the creative industry through her bustling career as one half of the recipe series Forkful TV\, and as the programme curator and community manager for Turkfest; a community-led arts and music festival based on Inishturk. \nAs well as hosting the illustrious Sing Along Social events\, Aoife is just about to launch her first book aimed at providing respite to the “always-on culture of busyness”. \nSoar\nSoar was founded in 2012 by Tony Griffin and Karl Swan. Soar is a collective movement that believes that there is greatness within all young people. They achieve this by creating and delivering early intervention-preventative\, wellness workshops for young people aged 12 to 18 years from all backgrounds. Their workshops empower young people to thrive\, believe in themselves and fulfil their true potential. \nBailies Coffee Roasters\nBailies are joining us from Belfast to provide a complimentary cupping demonstration presenting their speciality blend. They source and roast Fair Trade\, Rainforest Alliance and Organic coffees\, and develop working relationships with ethical suppliers who have strong focus on sustainability for local farmers and growers. \ncoffee|culture is a new series of creative talks that occupy Dublin’s best speciality cafés on one morning per month. Each venue is significant for its status on the Dublin City Coffee Map\, presenting a snapshot of a truly vibrant and bustling coffee scene of over 30 cafés\, each offering something unique and beautiful to Dublin’s fair city. \nTalks have been designed to provide a stimulating and inspiring start to the day\, ranging in theme from architecture to food writing\, set-design to performance art and everything in between. Speakers have been curated for their contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape and their motivation for creating innovative work in challenging times. \ncoffee|culture is a collaborative event organised in partnership with Above the Fold.

SUMMARY:The David Bowie Festival
DESCRIPTION:John Brereton on what David Bowie means to him and the festival he has created in his honour. \nTell us about the origins of the Bowie Fest? \nThe Grand Social had hosted the Bowie Birthday Bash for 5 years running with Rebel Rebel headlining so for 2016\, myself and Peter Quinn (lead singer of Rebel Rebel)\, decided to expand the bash into a ‘festival’ with extra events over the weekend in the venue. We got lucky when Bowie’s guitarist Gerry Leonard said he would be in town so it was brilliant to have that direct connection to Bowie guesting at the first Festival. When I was 18 I went to a Bowie Convention in London and it blew me away so Ive always wanted to do something like that in Dublin. With Bowie’s death the following day the Festival exploded into a 6 night multi-faceted\, multi-venue event within 12 months so its all happened a lot quicker than planned. \nWhat did Bowie mean to you growing up? Any stand out memories? \nI swapped my first illegal six pack of beer for a mates Hunky Dory album on Halloween night in 1981 and never looked back. I was consumed by his music and the lyrical imagery and cultural references within his songs made me delve into what made Bowie tick. It was a magical journey; his influence opened so many doors and I just loved how he brought theatre and sexual playfulness into rock n roll. I saw him live first in 83 (Serious Moonlight Tour) and in The Baggot Inn (with Tin Machine) but of all the times I saw him live his Olympia gigs were untouchable.  \nThe inaugural Bowie fest concluded the same night he passed away. What was your reaction when you heard the news? \nI remember leaving Gerry to the hotel on the Sunday night and he said he’d tell David how great it all went so I was on cloud nine. My four-year–old son woke me up the next morning with the news and it was just total shock. After living Bowie for the weekend it just felt so surreal. I was on the radio for most of the day being interviewed so I didn’t see any news reports and had no time to process what had happened. We hastily organised a vigil in The Grand Social that night for all the fans (which Gerry also attended) so the day and night was full on busy. It was only when I got home that night and turned on the TV that all the emotion came flooding out. \n\n\n\n\nYou have designer Jonathan Barnbrook in conversation and a screening of the acclaimed V&A exhibition as part of the programme. Is Bowie’s creative output and legacy is a limitless source of inspiration? \nMost definitely. His influence on music\, fashion and how we present ourselves as artists will be hard to surpass.  \nFavourite song? Album? Album cover? \nSweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (reprise). Hunky Dory. Low. (though these could change tomorrow 🙂  \n\nFurther details – http://www.dublinbowiefestival.ie \n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMThz7eQ6K0

SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope: New Year Sounds
DESCRIPTION:The Kaleidoscope series welcomes 2018 with a programme of 16th and 17th Italian quartets\, a flute/violin/viola trio by 19th century German composer Max Reger\, a Chinese folk duo and multimedia work by Ian Wilson for violin soloist. The original founder of the Kaleidoscope series\, Cliodhna Ryan is the featured violin soloist\, performing Ian Wilson’s “Feldwege/Holzwege”\, a suitably meditative work that also incorporates live electronics and film\, the latter part produced by Johnnie Lawson. Countertenor Mark Chambers leads the forces\, comprising trumpet\, baroque guitar and harpsichord\, in the Italian renaissance and baroque music while series’ overseers Karen Dervan (viola) and Lina Andonovska (flute) are joined by Larissa O Grady for the charming Max Reger work. And in a genre-debut for the series\, Chinese musicians Jiani Liu Doyle (guzheng) and Li Chen Lu (Chinese flute) will share their folk music and talents with the intimate Bello Bar audience.

SUMMARY:Danny Krivit
DESCRIPTION:“Music is one of the greatest forms of escapism. Music can transform your mood\, sense of being and transport you to another time and place. I can stick on a pair of earphones and be transported to a tropical beach in the Caribbean\, a smoke filled basement club in Berlin\, a B-Boy battle at The Roxy or a Disco in Manhattan. Going to a club and listening to someone like Danny Krivit is the epitome of this. It takes me to a time and place which I missed out on\, but will forever imagine. Getting to hear\, and play with\, someone who was instrumental in the whole Disco scene\, and no to forget the creator of the edit scene\, gives us a little insight into what dancefloors and DJ’s were like back then. And because Danny has been playing\, travelling\, collecting and producing since then\, we get to hear a true master take us through the decades to now. The importance of people such as Danny can never be understated\, as he paved the way\, influenced many new waves of DJs/diggers/producers and still continues to be a shining light for those of us who still want to loose ourselves on a dancefloor. SUMMARY:Adrian Crowley
DESCRIPTION:Midst the fanfare of hometown musicians and their trumpeting of Christmas shows sits the unassuming Crowley. He may fly under the radar of the masses but Crowley brings a tender beauty to his compositions and considerations on existence. Dark Eyed Messenger\, his most recent release\, is produced by Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens\, The Gloaming) and sees Crowley put down his guitar and “decide to live out his days as a silver birch tree”. A sturdy musical presence who may be overshadowed at times but one who we should truly rejoice!

SUMMARY:Storm(zy) Brewing
DESCRIPTION:If there happened to be a mural of the year awards ceremony\, then the one of Stormzy by the Subset collective in Smithfield would be on the podium. It truly has a transformative effect on the still grey-tinged surrounds but it may be gone by December 15th. Dublin City Council want it gone as it was erected without planning permission. Subset can’t afford to fight it. The mural is on the Linders building. Jonathan Melvin\, the property manager for the building has no beef with it. “It’s a massive shame for the mural to come down\, it brightened up an otherwise dull street.” C’mon DCC\, let some common sense prevail.

SUMMARY:Gaelynn Lea
DESCRIPTION:Gaelynn Lea was given the opportunity of a lifetime when she won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest. More than 6\,000 artists submitted videos in which they performed an original song behind a desk of their choosing with the hope of winning a chance to play a Tiny Desk concert at NPR. Gaelynn Lea was the overwhelming favorite of the six judges. and Gaelynn Lea certainly made the most of it. She and her husband Paul quit their jobs\, sold their house\, bought a van\, and hit the road. \nSince they left just over a year ago\, Gaelynn has played over 200 shows in 39 states and 6 countries. She has performed in the widest variety of venues imaginable – coffee shops\, bars\, music festivals\, elementary schools\, nursing homes\,colleges\, The House of Blues\, Music City Roots\, The Kennedy Center\, The State Department and even BBC World News. \nThis tale of adventure wouldn’t be particularly remarkable if the music failed to deliver. But Gaelynn Lea has developed a “stop you in your tracks sound.” (Bob Boilen\, All Songs Considered) Playing traditional fiddle music and original songs using her violin and a looping pedal\, Gaelynn Lea’s “music is imbued with a melancholic poetry so potent it must be heard to believed.” (Isaac Feldberg\, Boston Globe) \nGaelynn Lea performs from her electric wheelchair. She began playing violin 20 years ago after a creative music teacher helped her to adapt a playing style that suits her frame. Lea holds her instrument like a tiny cello and loops her classically trained rhythms and melodies “to create a symphonic cacophony that is both glorious in its reach and profoundly introspective”. (Collins de la Cour\, Ear to the Ground) Her original songs explore the contrasting nature of existence – dark and light\, birth and death\, anger and forgiveness\, sorrow and joy. Gaelynn Lea’s live performances can be overwhelmingly soul-stirring – Bob Boilen reported that “there was hardly a dry eye” at her 2016 Tiny Desk Concert. However\, she is not all seriousness during her shows. In fact\, Gaelynn is disarmingly charming onstage\, “at once self-deprecating and plain spokenly funny”. (Chris Riemenschneider\, Star Tribune) She regales the audience with humorous anecdotes in between songs\, putting those in attendance at ease. \nAlthough the past year has been spent mostly on the road\, Gaelynn Lea has somehow found the time to work on her fourth studio album; If Only Love Would Be Our Guide is expected to be released in September 2018. It is an eclectic collection that runs the gamut sonically – from pensive to luscious to aggressive to decidedly pop – and if that’s not enough variety\, there’s even a Finnish fiddle tune! The connecting thread of this album is Gaelynn Lea herself – a singular voice and violin guide the listener on a journey which touches on some of life’s greatest mysteries. \n  \nThe structure of these tracks made this album impossible to create alone\, so Gaelynn Lea enlisted the help of some musical friends to bring her new album to life. This arrangement is quite a departure for Lea\, who up until this point has crafted most of her music using only a few tools: a violin\, a voice\, and a looping pedal. Her band is comprised of several Minnesota heavy-hitters including Al Church\, Dave Mehling\, Marty Dosh\, Andrew Foreman\, and Alan Sparhawk. Their creative influence and musicality is evident on every track\, though the band’s contributions never cover up or diminish the poignancy or presence of Gaelynn’s music. Rather the new album allows for a fuller\, more complete expression of her heart and soul. \n  \nIn addition to performing and recording\, Gaelynn also loves to do speaking engagements about disability awareness\, the power of music\, and leading an enriching life. She has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta\, or Brittle Bones Disease. \n  \nGaelynn is a strong voice in the disability community; she uses her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change. Gaelynn Lea believes society must prioritize accessibility so people with disabilities can participate in their communities and use their gifts without barriers or discrimination.

SUMMARY:GalleryX Presents Imaginary Mythologies
DESCRIPTION:We have all heard about artists being inspired by myths and legends. These artists however have created their own. \nThe mysterious author of Gubu Dolls has built a history\, an epic\, a mythic narrative underlying his large-scale installation using individually created dolls\, reminiscent of the epic narrative bas-reliefs of the Assyrian or Roman tradition. \nDeirdre Nuttall is an ethnologist who crafts benevolent\, sometimes tragic deities punctuating the daily life and death of a lost civilisation. \nCome to GalleryX on the 7th of December and admire the beautiful artefacts and the inspiring stories that underlie them! And why not\, procure a couple of Christmas presents that won’t be easily forgotten…
