SUMMARY:Sorcha Richardson
DESCRIPTION:Her name is not one that’s necessarily on the tip of most Dublin music musos. And this is partly to do with the fact that she’s been primarily based in Brooklyn. Her single Waking Life marked a more pop direction with its shimmering synths and shuffling beats. Hopefully she’ll drop her new single\, Can’t We Pretend\, at this show and we can see if this is a more permanent direction for her.

SUMMARY:Paul McKinley - Elysian Fields
DESCRIPTION:‘Elysian Fields’ refers to an afterlife in Greek mythology\, a place where the souls of gods and heroes as well as those associated with them would remain after death. Greece is a country dealing with mass displacement of people from war torn countries and though economically unstable\, their contribution to aiding those who have crossed the Aegean Sea merited a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016\, dedicated to all Greek Islanders. \nWithin this exhibition\, Paul McKinley considers modern conceptions of Greece as compared with its ancient history. His paintings feature aspects of Greek landscape; islands\, mountains and cliff edges\, often informed by compositions within art historical paintings. These landscapes are created from an amalgamation of various places and as such they are not one specific location\, but rather an essence of place. \nWithin Elysian Fields\, McKinley’s work charts the present-day representation of Greek landscape while the titles of the paintings subtly refer to parallels between heroes of ancient Greek mythology and the unwritten contemporary epic\, fashioned from the plight of individuals in exile. \nUntil March 10

SUMMARY:'F.A.T. D.A.D.' play at The Complex
DESCRIPTION:‘F.A.T. D.A.D.’\, an acronym for the six counties under British rule\, portrays the life of teacher\, Fiachra Martin. His classroom acts as a symbol of a divided Ireland and the impact this perpetual tension has on lives of his students. Mr. Martin goes on hunger strike with Bobby Sands\, and as his beliefs deepen\, he finds himself unemployed and homeless. \nInspired by true events\, this play tells the story of the profound impact a teacher and nationalist hunger striker had on his pupils in north inner-city Dublin during the 1980s and 1990s. The play depicts the cultural and social problems of drugs and homelessness of that era\, issues that still resonate today. \nThe man behind-the-script for this play is celebrated Irish playwright and Dubliner\, Anthony Goulding. North Dublin native\, Darragh Byrne\, plays a lead role in this production directed by Vanessa Fielding. A show about Dublin is appropriately put on by the artistic products of the city. ‘F.A.T.D.A.D’ will run from Thursday\, February 15th to Sunday\, February25th.

SUMMARY:Maria Kelly
DESCRIPTION:In music spheres\, this is the time of year where the ‘ones to watch’ emerge. However\, we prefer to think of Maria Kelly as one to keep a pair of binoculars firmly focused on. Her atmospheric folk output is both comforting and beguiling. There’s a tender ebb and flow to her vocals and arrangements which mine emotions with candour. Her debut EP\, The Things I Should\, was followed by a single Hollow at the tail end of 2017. Catch her in these cosy confines with support from Anna Mieke. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Sound + Vision Exhibition at Image Now Gallery
DESCRIPTION:“Everything about him was fascinating\, from exploring gender\, identity\, humanity and morality throughout his work.”  \nDublin’s Bowie Festival — a mix of performances\, screenings and other celebrations of his work and legacy – kicked off in early January. \nThe 5th of the month witnessed the opening of the Sound + Vision exhibition in Image Now Gallery. \nThis group show will feature 25 specially created typographic posters\, one for every studio album released by the icon during his five-decade-long career.\n \nEach poster has been created by some of the best creatives in the industry\, from both Dublin and London. \nAll prints in the show are available to buy\, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society. \n \nThe exhibition is organised by Jennifer O’Brien\, a graduate of NCAD and designer at Image Now. \n \n“The response has been incredible. The whole show came together in a matter of weeks\, between writing a brief\, contacting printers\, and getting all the creatives involved. \nWe sent a call out just before the Christmas rush\, which was crazy\, but we really couldn’t believe how eager everyone was to get involved and contribute really considered and beautifully executed pieces. \n  \nIt’s an amazing thing to see people come together create original work that represents the retrospective of David Bowie’s legacy\, and to contribute to such a great cause.”  \n“It was my mum who first introduced me to his music\, so I had always had a connection to him through her. The really captivating thing about him for me came from his changing persona and his ability to constantly reinvent himself and express himself down so many creative avenues. \nEverything about him was fascinating\, from exploring gender\, identity\, humanity and morality throughout his work. \nIt’s important to continue celebrating his legacy and how he influenced so many people to be open and express themselves freely. \nIt is especially important to consider this today in a contemporary Ireland\, where we have allowed voices to be heard on issues of equality and made a positive change on our own society. \n \nIt’s the people like David Bowie who encourage others to be fearless and open to new ideas and opinions.”\n \nSound + Vision is a collaboration between Image Now Gallery\, Dublin Bowie Festival\, Hang Tough and Hens Teeth\, and  runs from January 5th – February 16th at the Image Now Gallery\, 17a New Bride Street\, Wood Quay\, Dublin 8.  \nimagenow.ie  \ndublinbowiefestival.ie  \nWords: David Wall  \n—  \nDesigner / Album / Year\n \nJordan Huysmans / David Bowie / 1967   \nUnthink / Spaced Oddity / 1969  \nJohn Paul Dowling / The Man Who Sold The World / 1970   \nSinéad McAleer & Kathryn Wilson/ Hunky Dory / 1971 \nCian O’Connell/ The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars / 1972 \nDetail / Aladdin Sane / 1973 \nPost / Pin Ups / 1973 \nNiamhMcNally / Diamond Dogs / 1974   \nMarcus Swan / Young Americans / 1975 \nFox&Mouse / Station To Station / 1976  \nWorkGroup / Low / 1977   \nDynamo / “Heroes” / 1977 \nOne Strong Arm / Lodger/ 1979 \nKidd Katie / Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) / 1980 \nImage Now / Let’s Dance / 1983   \nRichard Seabrooke / Tonight / 1984 \nMike Simpson / Never Let Me Down / 1987 \nSignal Type Foundry / Black Tie\, White Noise/ 1993 \nDesign factory / Outside / 1995 \nOscar Torrans / Earthling / 1997 \nOrStudio / Hours / 1999 \nDiane Dear / Heathen / 2002     \nAiden Grennelle / Reality / 2003 \nRed&Grey / The Next Day / 2013   \nBureau Bonanza / Blackstar / 2016

SUMMARY:Look Back in Anger
DESCRIPTION:The 26-year-old playwright John Osborne premiered Look Back in Anger in the Royal Court in 1956. It’s arrival on Britain’s post-war theatrical scene punctured the comedy and caper sops with a harsh kitchen sink realism. It explored sex\, class\, religion\, politics and the media. It paved the way for the likes of Ken Loach and Mike Leigh. Annabelle Comyn is at the directorial helm for this new production which will hopefully herald a fresh start for an establishment with reason to look back in anger too. \nUntil March 28

SUMMARY:Spike
DESCRIPTION:Spike\, Dublin’s alternative cello festival\, returns for its second outing. \nTaking place Friday 9th -Sunday 11th February in venues across Dublin\, the 2018 programme will present unique events with some of the most talented and exciting cello artists (& friends) from home and abroad. \nAmong the highlights of the festival will be a series of performances taking place each night at the Workman’s Club\, featuring a line-up of stellar and fascinating artists. \nThe festival will open on the evening of Friday 9th February with performances by Lioba Petrie and Laura Moody. Moody is a wildly alternative cellist\, vocalist and avant-garde singer-songwriter who creates emotive songs that reveal a multitude of influences and which inhabit a unique space between the contemporary avant-garde\, classical music\, experimental pop and singer-songwriter traditions. Festival organiser cellist Petrie will be presenting a brand new project\, performing a live film score to screen from one of Ireland’s most exciting filmmakers. \nThe Saturday night concert will feature US/Albanian artist\, composer/cellist Rubin Kodheli\, a celebrated\, versatile\, genre-transcending creative rebel most recently seen by Dublin audiences performing with Laurie Anderson at the NCH in spring 2017. Rubin has made a name for himself performing with Roberta Flack\, Henry Threadgill\, Wyclef Jean\, Norah Jones\, Vampire Weekend\, Dave Douglas\, Makoto Ozone\, Wadada Leo Smith and Joan Labarabara. At this concert\, he will be performing with two ensembles – Blues in Space and the Kodheli  Cello Quartet. Blues in Space\, made up of Kodheli on cello  and Garrett Brown on drums\, is quickly rising to the forefront of a new avant-rock movement\, offering audiences a chaotic and intense musical experience. As Lucid Culture wrote\, “Bands like Blues in Space make a good battering ram: they destroy boundaries.” Kodheli will also be performing with a specially assembled cello quartet of Kate Ellis\, Laura Moody and Ben Cashell who will join Kodheli to perform a selection of his cello quartet music. \nThe festival’s closing performance on the Sunday night “Cello Voce” will feature Cello Ireland with leading Irish cellist- songwriters Mary Barnecutt\, Aleka Potenga\, Kevin Murphy and Anna-Mieke Bishop with special guest Liam O’ Maonlai\, a singer whose musical journey has brought him all over the world\, exploring the music of Africa\, India\, America\, Australia and Japan. This unique event\, will celebrate the cello\, the voice\, the Irish tradition and an amalgamation of styles and compositions\, as the assembled musicians perform original material in new settings. \nThe festival will have events for all ages\, with workshops in schools with Rubin Kodheli\, an inspirational improvisational workshop led by Nashville cellist Zan Berry\, and an All Ages Gig with Zan Berry and Irish cello player and singer Naomi Berrill. \nThe Hugh Lane Gallery will be home to free events across the weekend\, with the Spike festival programming the Gallery’s regular Sunday Concert at 12 noon\, and a “Cellinstallation” of Irish cellists performing solo in the Gallery foyer over the weekend. \nAnd for something a bit different\, Kitty Maguire will be leading her “Yocella” class – a blissful “yin” yoga class accompanied by cello. \nFestival organisers\, cellists Lioba Petrie and Mary Barnecutt\, are looking forward to presenting their exciting programme for 2018\, after the 2017 edition attracted audiences from as far afield as the UK and the US.

SUMMARY:Swan Lake
DESCRIPTION:When Michael Keegan-Dolan’s adaptation of Swan Lake first aired at the Theatre Festival in 2016\, superlatives swirled around his creation like the feathers from his swans. And with justification. His uniquely Irish understanding of this fable is nimble\, fierce\, fragile and sumptuous. His prince is unemployed and on the edge. Accompanied by a fantastic score by Slow Moving Clouds; this Swan takes flight and your heart will soar as it does. \nUntil February 17

SUMMARY:Shifting/Crowhammer/Alien She
DESCRIPTION:Shifting is the unbearably mouth-watering combination of Paul ‘the softcat’ Clynes and the brothers Hedigan. Effortless and sensual\, the music conjured by these kings among men \nCrowhammer are Dublin’s premier narrative driven sci-fi/fantasy stoner rock/krautrock music group. Purveyors of  Sci-fi inflected heaviness. The band has gigged semi-regularly around the country since their foundation. \nAlien She is Katie O’Neill (solo experimental artist) on vocals and guitar\, Aoife McDonagh (poet and writer) on bass and vocals and Darragh McCabe (Jon Dots) on drums. Playing songs that have been described as expressive\, shoegaze\, experimental\, and agitated punk — Alien She prides themselves on their unique genre-defying sound.

SUMMARY:The Approach
DESCRIPTION:Mark O’Rowe is arguably one of our finest playwrights (Howie the Rookie\, Crestfall\, Terminus) and the last work we saw by him Our Few and Evil Days merely confirmed this. \nHe returns to the stage with this story of three women exploring their interior lives through conversation. Starring Cathy Belton\, Derbhle Crotty and Aisling O’Sullivan; The Approach is touted as both a “psychological puzzle and quietly devastating tragedy”. \nUntil February 24.

SUMMARY:Jay Glass Dubs (Live) + Bokeh Edwards (DJ)
DESCRIPTION:Jay Glass Dubs is Dimitris Papadatos’s outlet for stripped-back\, broken-down dub mutations. A “counter-factual historical approach of dub music”\, his sound is at once brutal and lumbering and ethereally light. Since his first release under the Jay Glass Dubs alias by way of Parisian outfit Hylé Tapes he’s gone from strength to strength\, with several brilliant releases on Bokeh Versions\, Seagrave and Anòmia – including remixes for avant-garde rock band Guerilla Toss. His recent compilation of unreleased dubs on Ecstatic was a late contender for our favourite record of 2017. \nBokeh Versions kingpin Bokeh Edwards will be DJing on the night\, giving us a rare chance to hear the outernational sorcery that’s moulded Bokeh Versions into one of the most exciting experimental labels operating at the minute.

SUMMARY:TradFest
DESCRIPTION:Expanding the idea of trad to somewhat stretched limits at times\, TradFest has nonetheless thankfully mushroomed in scale over recent years. Martha Wainwright\, Judy Collins\, Andy Irvine & Donal Lunny\, This Is How We Fly\, Wallis Bird\, The New Folk with Ailbhe Reddy are among the mash of old and new. We’re going to google Socks in the Frying Pan once these words are written. This year TradFest also pays a musical tribute to the legendary Eamonn Campbell (The Dubliners) with all proceeds from the concert at St Michan’s Church will go to Coolmine\, a charity dedicated to overcoming addiction. There’s family concerts\, free gigs and a screening of Robert Manthoulis’s The Irish Or The Memory of A People which examined Irish traditional music in 1971.

SUMMARY:Dara O’Briain - Voice of Reason
DESCRIPTION:He did 17 dates in the autumn and now he returns for another seven which basically means Dara O’Briain will have approximately 24\,000 people see his Voice of Reason tour. As homegrown comics go\, only the likes of Tommy Tiernan would have once eclipsed him. O’Briain is affable with a jovial personal and jubbly presence. He’s also boasts an enviable range of hosting talent from Robot Wars to travel shows to penning Sunday Times articles about his love of Star Wars. His pool of experience and seemingly endless fascinations adds an informed edge to his observations. Oh and he’s sold out all these dates too it seems.
