DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is once again conjuring up the spooky side of science and history with the return of its much-loved festival\, Samhain agus Science. Now in its eighth year\, the festival blends cutting-edge research with Celtic traditions to explore where science\, culture and the supernatural collide. Following a number of spectacular events last week\, the festival wraps with three fascinating events today and tomorrow. \n1. The Demon’s in the Detail sees Theoretical Physicist and Senior Lecturer in Physics at Bristol University\, Felix Flicker\, present a talk on the surprising rich history of demons in physics and the various 19th century thought experiments that invoked demons as imagined agents capable of superhuman powers. He will then present ongoing work in which we seek to detail a lesser-known modern example of demons in physics: Pines’ demon\, a new type of particle observed in 2023. 7pm\, Monday Nov 3rd\, Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. Doors 6.30pm. \n2. Magma in Motion\, an engaging science event presented by researchers from the Geophysics Section of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the Dublin Magmatism Group that explores the dynamic forces beneath Earth’s surface. 6pm Tuesday Nov 4th\, M4 Lecture theatre\, Museum Building TCD. Doors 6.30pm. \n3. Medieval Murder Mysteries: Homicide in Early Irish Law a mesmerising talk by Dr Viktoriia Krivoshchekova\, post-doctoral scholar in the School of Celtic Studies at DIAS\, on how medieval Irish law dealt with murder\, especially when the identity of the killer was not obvious. It will explore how such cases were treated by the law and what methods could be used to investigate them to answer the age-old question: “whodunnit?” 7pm – 8pm Tuesday Nov 4th\, Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. DESCRIPTION:First it flickers and then it tips (us out of the Holocene). \nArtist Geraldine O’Neill has long responded to the increasing confrontation with human engagement and relationship with the ecosystem\, in particular the Anthropocene whose traces are now embedded within the geological layers of the Earth’s structure. Her new exhibition\, Flicker\, Flicker\, responds to the escalating tension between humanity and the natural world. Her work speaks directly to the Anthropocene\, our current epoch\, where human presence is inscribed into the geological fabric of the earth. \nFor O’Neill\, this presence is made vivid through the everyday. Domestic references\, images of her children\, and items from her studio mingle with art-historical fragments\, still birds\, and household detritus. These layered references move between the personal and the collective\, situating the intimacy of home life within broader cultural and ecological frameworks. \nO’Neill’s distinctive painterly approach\, grounded in conceptual rigour and technical mastery\, reanimates these instances across time and memory. Award-winning artist and illustrator Celina Buckley has been announced as illustrator in residence 2025. This prestigious residency includes a free\, five-week workshop programme dedicated to fostering emerging Irish talent in the field of children’s book illustration. Aspiring illustrators are invited to apply for the limited workshop spots. Applications open now via redlinefestival.ie and the deadline for applications is August 22nd\, 2025. \nOther highlights of the festival include the prestigious Red Line Book Festival Poetry Competition which attracts hundreds of entries from all across Ireland annually. Award-winning poet Aifric Mac Aodha will judge the competition. The shortlist will be announced on Wednesday 1st October 2025\, with the winner announced during this year’s Red Line Book Festival which runs this year from October 13th to 19th\, 2025. \nSupported by South Dublin County Council (SDCC) Libraries and Arts\, The Red Line Book Festival features local\, national and international authors\, as well as panels\, workshops\, theatrical productions\, children’s events and more. Matthew Whiteside\, Émilie Girard-Charest\, Rylan Gleave\, Sam Perkin (Irish premiere)\, Naomi Berrill and Bill Whelan. \nEmma Lloyd performs a programme of contemporary works that explore the violin’s expressive possibilities through extended techniques\, electronics\, and open-ended interpretation. Featuring music from her album mue\, the concert brings together pieces shaped by long-standing collaborations and a shared curiosity for sound. \nFrom delicate textures to dense sonorities\, each work approaches the violin in a unique way as Emma’s own caprices esquisses push the instrument to its sonic limits\, embracing the unpredictable. \nThese works are shaped by long-standing creative relationships between Emma and the composers and a shared curiosity for the violin’s possibilities. At the heart of the concert is an exploration of sound in flux—where each performance is a conversation between structure and spontaneity. As an improviser\, Emma’s performance tends to be quiet and intimate in nature\, exploring the innate timbral qualities of the violin\, and discovering some of the often hidden sounds that can be found with her unique combination of technique and tools. \n \nNaomi Berrill is a cellist\, singer and composer originally from Ireland\, now based in Florence\, Italy\, Naomi is one of the most eclectic voices in today’s music scene. After her classical training\, she developed a unique language using the cello as an accompanying instrument to her voice\, while exploring new harmonic possibilities of the cello . Her work extends to theatre\, contemporary dance\, and design and she has collaborated with artists such as Arvo Pärt\, Giovanni Sollima and Mario Brunello. \nShe is founder of the High Notes Festival in the Apuan Alps\, now in its 14th edition. In 2024\, she was commissioned by the Cellissimo festival by Music for Galway to compose a work for string ensemble\, choir\, ukulele ensemble and solo cello. SUMMARY:Artistic Islands
DESCRIPTION:Taking place at Dublin Castle Museum through to March 22nd 2026\, this exciting exhibition identifies Ireland and its diaspora as places where creative genius was always encouraged. \n\n\nVisitors can experience Irish art and its global impact in new ways at Dublin Castle’s Coach House Gallery\, where parallel stories of artistic genius and diversity are expressed through the work of Maria Simonds-Gooding and Frank Walter of Antigua\, each of whom have deep connection to their island landscapes. Irish artist\, Maria Simonds-Gooding\, has a particular connection and affinity to the OPW-managed Blasket Islands. In this exhibition\, she captures timeless histories of the heritage of Ireland as found in its ancient landscape. For more than sixty years\, Maria has engaged with and responded to the Irish landscape in a variety of artistic media\, including ink\, paint\, plaster and aluminum. She was also a formative influence on Micheál O’Gaoithín\, the Blasket’s great visual artist and poet. \nArtistic Islands expands outward from Ireland to the Caribbean’s Leeward Islands\, where a far-flung global diaspora comes into focus. From the 1630’s\, Irish people were sent to the Caribbean arriving as indentured servants mixing with enslaved persons of African descent\, merging cultures to form a resilient society. Worlds collided in these sun-drenched islands where much of their tradition expressing the breadth and impact of their creative genius remains. This brilliance shines in the artistic achievement of Antiguan polymath Frank Walter\, who saw himself\, among others\, as an Irish peer. \nWalter used art to create his own universe–an aesthetically pleasing environment manifest through painting\, sculpture\, music and the arts. Imbued with a high intellect and deep knowledge of history and culture\, Walter fought to protect the heritage of his tiny island nation. He painted abstract paintings\, using the intricate patterns of seeds used in Antiguan seedwork – one of the earliest artforms unique to his island nation\, dating back to the earliest arrival of enslaved persons from Africa. \nFunded by the legacy of Frank Walter\, seedwork survives to this day thanks to a group of Antiguan women whose work will be portrayed along with Walter’s paintings to express the timelessness of these art forms. \nThe ‘Artistic Islands’ exhibition takes place at Dublin Castle until March 22nd 2026.

DESCRIPTION:Kilmainham Gaol Museum is currently hosting  an exhibition created by Professor Joanna Brück of the UCD School of Archaeology in association with seven people from around the world who came to Ireland as refugees. \nObjects\, War and Memory in Ireland Past and Present explores how objects tell stories of courage\, resilience\, love and hope in the face of conflict through the personal testimonies of participants who describe objects they have brought from home and what these mean to them. \nInterspersed with these personal stories are the stories of objects from Kilmainham Gaol Museum\, revealing resonances between the contemporary experiences of refugees and experiences of war\, oppression and in Ireland’s recent past. \nThe exhibition runs from 26 September 2025 to 31 January 2026\, with last admission at 4pm. \nGo see!

SUMMARY:Alice Maher - The Sibyls
DESCRIPTION:‘In The Sibyls\, Alice Maher presents a series of monumental drawings of female figures entangled in\, or twisting free from\, vast snaking mounds of hair. At the base of these drawings the artist has placed small piles of highly polished\, irregular objects— amorphous forms that resemble great globs of mercury. The title of the series\, The Sibyls\, references the oracular women of archaic times\, seers who lived apart from society and were believed to channel the prophesies of the divine. In Renaissance art these figures were transformed into biblical prophetesses\, pictured holding scrolls or books\, as in Michelangelo’s majestic turban-clad sibyls in the Sistine chapel. \nMaher’s Sibyls are different – rather than resting serenely in the architecture of institutional belief or patriarchal systems of meaning\, these Sibyls are altogether more dynamic and equivocal. Their scrolls have morphed into chaotic skeins of hair; their turbans twisted into massive living organisms that envelop\, extend from\, and consume their heads\, while their powerful bodies struggle and strain to impart their portentous message… \n \n…Culturally coded as either dangerous or shameful depending on its context\, hair becomes here a visual agent of instability. Are the Sibyls coming into being through this dense matrix of bodily material\, or are they caught in the web of their own weaving? Are they rising or falling\, emerging or succumbing? The signs are deliberately destabilising; their meanings are as slippery and shifting as the mysterious sculptural shapes tumbled below.’ \nThe above extract is taken from an Accompanying Text written by Dr Sarah Kelleher. \nAlice Maher\, The Sibyls opens at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery on  Thursday September 11th. It’s impossible to pick out highlights but music lovers (and performers) of a certain age are bound to find many touchstones in Frank Shouldice’s Once We Were Punks and How To Build A Library\, an inspirational triumph over adversity from Kenya in which the filmmakers document the quest to transform the formerly whites-only\, colonial-era McMillan Memorial Library into a vibrant cultural hub for a new generation of Africans. The hot ticket is bound to be the Thurs Sept 11th screening of Gerry Adams: A Ballymurphy Man\, to hear Adams’ uncensored perspectives on the conflict\, a life spanning war and transition to peace\, and an ongoing campaign towards Irish unity.
